Bing Webmaster Tools: Setup Guide (and Why It Matters for ChatGPT)
By Neha
Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free dashboard for website owners: it shows how Bing crawls, indexes and ranks your site, and since February 2026 how often Microsoft's AI answers cite your pages. Setting it up takes about five minutes if you already use Google Search Console, because you can import your sites from there.
Many business owners never open it, because Google gets nearly all the attention. That is a mistake for one reason in particular: OpenAI lists Microsoft as one of the search providers behind ChatGPT's web search. This guide explains what that does and does not mean, how to set Bing Webmaster Tools up, and which reports are worth a monthly look.
What is Bing Webmaster Tools?
It is the Bing version of Google Search Console: a free account where you prove you own a website and Bing tells you what it sees.
With it you can submit your sitemap, check whether a page is in Bing's index, see the searches your site appears for on Bing, find technical problems and test your robots.txt file. Bing's getting started checklist says you can sign up with an existing Microsoft, Google or Facebook account, and that SEO reports run automatically on verified sites every alternate week, so you get fresh suggestions about twice a month.
The main tools, as named in Bing's announcement of the current version and later updates:
- Search Performance: clicks and impressions from Bing search.
- URL Inspection: whether a page is in Bing's index and any problems with it.
- Sitemaps and URL Submission: tell Bing which pages exist and which are new.
- Site Scan: an on-demand audit that crawls your site for common technical problems.
- Robots.txt Tester: checks your robots.txt with the same parser Bing uses in production.
- Backlinks and Keyword Research: links Bing has found to your site, and search ideas you can filter by country, language and device.
- AI Performance: citations of your pages in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries (more on this below).
Menu names change from time to time, so if something has moved, use the search box in the dashboard.
Does Bing Webmaster Tools help you show up in ChatGPT?
Indirectly, perhaps. Here is what is documented and what is not.
Documented: OpenAI's help page on searching the web with ChatGPT says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers", rewrites your question into search queries and sends them to those providers. In the same section it points readers to the Microsoft privacy statement as one of those providers. Separately, OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that want to appear in ChatGPT search answers should allow its OAI-SearchBot crawler in robots.txt.
Not documented: OpenAI does not say how much of ChatGPT's search depends on Bing, or that being in Bing's index gets you into ChatGPT's answers. Treat claims that "ChatGPT just uses Bing" as a simplification.
What that means in practice: if Bing cannot crawl or index your pages, you close off one of the routes ChatGPT's search may use to find you, and you make it harder for Copilot, Microsoft's own assistant, to cite you. Being properly indexed in Bing is cheap insurance. Pair it with allowing the AI crawlers you want; the AI crawler checker shows whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and other bots can read your site. Our guide on showing up in ChatGPT and AI search covers the rest.
How to set up Bing Webmaster Tools
The quickest way is to import your sites from Google Search Console; otherwise add the site by hand and verify it.
Bing's add and verify site help page describes both routes.
Route 1: import from Google Search Console (fastest)
- Go to bing.com/webmasters and sign in.
- Choose to import from Google Search Console and allow Bing to read your Search Console account.
- Bing lists the verified sites in your Search Console with their sitemaps. Tick the ones you want and click Import.
- The imported sites are verified automatically, and their sitemaps come across too.
Bing then checks your Search Console access from time to time, and imports any new sitemap it finds there. You can import up to 100 sites at once.
Route 2: add the site by hand
Type your website address, then prove you own it with one of four methods: automatic DNS verification (offered only for domain providers that support it), uploading a BingSiteAuth.xml file to your site's root folder, pasting a meta tag into your home page's head section, or adding a CNAME record at your domain provider.
Either way, Bing says it usually takes about 48 hours for data to appear. If you have not set up Google Search Console yet, do that first. Our Google Search Console guide walks through it, and then the import above takes a minute.
Submit your sitemap and use IndexNow
Once the site is verified, make sure Bing has your sitemap, and use IndexNow to tell Bing about new or changed pages straight away.
If you imported from Search Console, your sitemap probably came across already. Check the Sitemaps section. If it is missing, submit the full address, usually something like yoursite.in/sitemap.xml. Bing's checklist says it accepts XML sitemaps and sitemap index files, RSS 2.0, Atom feeds and plain text files with one address per line.
Before you submit, check that the sitemap lists only real, working pages. The sitemap checker finds your sitemap, counts its pages and spots addresses that should not be in it. If you have no sitemap at all, the sitemap generator makes one from a list of your page addresses. Our XML sitemap guide explains what belongs in one.
IndexNow is a simple way to ping search engines when a page changes. According to the IndexNow FAQ, one submission is shared with all the search engines that take part, including Bing, and a single request can carry up to 10,000 addresses. It also says plainly that submitting a URL does not guarantee indexing. Google is not among the search engines the FAQ lists, so use Search Console for Google.
Many WordPress SEO plugins can send IndexNow for you. If yours does not, the IndexNow submitter creates the key file and sends your new pages for free, with no account.
Which Bing Webmaster Tools reports should you check?
For a small business, three reports are worth a monthly look: Search Performance, Site Scan and the Robots.txt Tester. Use URL Inspection whenever a page seems missing.
| Report | What to look for | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Search Performance | Which searches show your site on Bing and which pages get clicks | Monthly |
| URL Inspection | Whether an important page is indexed, and why not if it is missing | When a page seems missing |
| Site Scan | Broken pages, missing titles, redirect problems | After big site changes, or every few months |
| Robots.txt Tester | Whether Bingbot is blocked from pages that should be found | After any robots.txt change |
| SEO reports | Bing's own suggestions, refreshed about twice a month | Monthly |
| AI Performance | Which pages Copilot and Bing's AI answers cite | Monthly |
The Robots.txt Tester matters more than it sounds. A single wrong line can block Bingbot from your whole site, and a page Bing cannot crawl is unlikely to be cited in its AI answers either. You can check any page against Bingbot, Googlebot or an AI bot with the free robots.txt tester, and our robots.txt guide explains each line.
Compare Bing's Search Performance with Google Search Console now and then. If a page gets clicks on Google but never appears on Bing, check it with URL Inspection; it may simply not be indexed there.
What does Bing's AI Performance report show?
It shows how often your pages are cited as sources in Microsoft Copilot, Bing's AI-generated summaries and some partner integrations.
Microsoft launched it as a public preview on 10 February 2026. Its announcement describes four views:
- Total citations: how many times your pages were shown as sources in AI answers in the chosen period. It does not tell you where in the answer they appeared.
- Average cited pages: the average number of your pages cited each day.
- Grounding queries: a sample of the phrases the AI used when it looked up content, which Microsoft says it will keep refining.
- Page-level citation activity: which of your pages are cited most often.
The announcement does not mention clicks, so treat this as a visibility report, not a traffic report. It covers Microsoft's own AI surfaces and the partners it lists, and it does not claim to cover ChatGPT. Still, it is one of the few official sources of data on AI citations you can get for free, which makes it worth a look each month.
Local businesses: do not forget Bing Places
Bing Webmaster Tools covers your website. Your business listing on Bing Maps is managed separately, in Bing Places for Business.
In October 2025, Microsoft moved business listing management to bing.com/forbusiness, according to Search Engine Journal's report, and improved the flow for importing listings from Google Business Profile. For a shop, clinic or coaching centre that already has a good Google listing, importing it is the fastest way to get the same name, hours and phone number onto Bing.
After importing, check the category and hours by hand, since not every Google category has an exact Bing match. Keep the name, address and phone number the same everywhere you are listed. Our guide to Google Business Profile optimization covers what a complete listing looks like, and the same rules apply on Bing.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bing Webmaster Tools free?
Yes. It is free for anyone who can prove they own a website. You can sign up with a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account and add your sites, including by importing them from Google Search Console.
How do I add my site from Google Search Console to Bing?
In Bing Webmaster Tools, choose the option to import from Google Search Console, allow access, then tick the sites you want and click Import. The sites are verified automatically and their sitemaps are imported. Data usually appears within about 48 hours.
Does ChatGPT use Bing?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends queries to third-party search providers and lists Microsoft among them. It does not say how much it relies on Bing. Being indexed in Bing is sensible, and you should also allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt if you want to appear in ChatGPT search.
Do I need Bing Webmaster Tools if I already use Google Search Console?
You do not need it to rank on Google, but it is worth the five minutes. It shows whether Bing can index your pages, which also matters for Microsoft Copilot, and its AI Performance report shows citations in Microsoft's AI answers, which you cannot see anywhere else.
Does IndexNow work for Google?
No. The IndexNow FAQ lists Bing and several other search engines, but not Google. For Google, submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and request indexing for important pages there.
