Does Your Website Need an llms.txt File?

By Neha

A web designer messages you: "Sir, your site also needs an llms.txt file for ChatGPT, otherwise AI will not show you." They quote ₹5,000 to add it. You have never heard of the thing, and the name sounds technical enough that it might be important.

Here is the honest picture. An llms.txt file is a short text file that summarises your business for AI tools. It is cheap to make, harmless to have, and might help a little. But it is a proposal, not a rule, and none of the big AI companies has publicly confirmed that their assistants use it. It is a ten-minute job, not a ₹5,000 one.

This guide explains what the file is, what it can and cannot do, and how to make one yourself for free.

Short answer: You do not strictly need an llms.txt file, and it will not get you into ChatGPT on its own. It is worth adding because it costs nothing and takes ten minutes, but only after the basics are done: AI crawlers allowed in, clear pages and correct business details. Make one with the free llms.txt generator, add links to your key pages, and upload it to the top folder of your site.

What is an llms.txt file?

An llms.txt file is a plain text file that sits at the root of your website, so it opens at an address like yourbusiness.in/llms.txt. "LLM" stands for large language model, the technology behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and similar assistants.

The idea was proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard, co-founder of the AI company Answer.AI. His reasoning was simple. Web pages are cluttered with menus, banners, pop-ups and scripts. An AI tool trying to understand a site has to dig through all of that. A short file written in Markdown, a simple text format where # marks a heading and [text](link) marks a link, could hand it the essentials directly.

A basic llms.txt for a dental clinic in Pune might look like this:

# Smile Care Dental Clinic

> Family dental clinic in Kothrud, Pune. Check-ups, root canal treatment, braces and children's dentistry. Open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm.

## Details

- Location: Kothrud, Pune, Maharashtra
- Phone and WhatsApp: +91 98765 43210

## Key pages

- [Treatments and prices](https://smilecaredental.in/treatments): what we offer and what it costs
- [Book an appointment](https://smilecaredental.in/book): online booking and timings
- [Common questions](https://smilecaredental.in/faq): pain, payment, insurance and first visits

The proposal suggests this shape: the name as a heading, a one-line summary, then sections of links to the pages that matter most, each with a short note.

Does ChatGPT actually read llms.txt?

This is the question that matters, and the answer is: nobody outside the AI companies knows for sure.

As of October 2026, OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Perplexity have not publicly confirmed that their assistants use llms.txt when deciding what to say about a business. Google staff have said publicly that Google Search does not use it. Some software and developer-tool companies publish llms.txt files for their documentation, and some AI coding tools can read them when a user points them at one. That is a long way from "ChatGPT reads it before recommending a bakery".

What AI assistants are known to use is your normal web pages, read by their crawlers or found through a search engine. That is where most of your effort should go.

So be wary of anyone who sells llms.txt as a secret way into AI answers. It is a sensible small extra. It is not a ranking switch. If you keep hearing new labels like AEO and GEO alongside it, our plain guide to SEO vs AEO vs GEO sorts out what each one means for a small business.

llms.txt vs robots.txt: what is the difference?

The names are similar, so the two get mixed up. They do opposite jobs.

robots.txtllms.txt
What it doesTells bots which pages they may or may not readDescribes your business and points to your best pages
Is it a standard?Yes, an agreed web standard followed by Google, Bing and the major AI crawlersNo, a 2024 proposal with unconfirmed support
Can it hurt you?Yes, one wrong line can hide your site from Google or AI toolsHardly, it is a summary file
Does every site need one?Strongly recommendedOptional

The important point: if your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, an llms.txt file will not undo that. The bot never gets permission to read your site. Check robots.txt first. Our robots.txt guide explains the file in plain words, and the robots.txt tester shows whether a given bot, such as GPTBot or PerplexityBot, is allowed to read a page and which line decides.

What an llms.txt file can and cannot do

What it can do

  • Give any AI tool that does read it a clean, accurate summary of your business, in your own words.
  • Point that tool straight to your most useful pages, such as prices, services and contact.
  • Act as a tidy fact sheet for you. Writing one forces you to state what you do in a single clear sentence, which is useful for your website and Google listing too.

What it cannot do

  • It cannot force ChatGPT, Gemini or any other assistant to mention you.
  • It cannot replace pages. If your services and prices are not on your website, listing them in llms.txt does not make them appear in search.
  • It cannot block AI tools from using your content. That is robots.txt's job.
  • It cannot fix wrong details elsewhere. If Justdial shows an old phone number, AI tools may still repeat it.
  • It does nothing for your Google ranking.

Cost vs benefit: is it worth adding?

For most small businesses, yes, as a last small step.

The cost is about ten minutes and nothing in rupees. The risk is close to zero: it is a public text file with facts that are already on your website. Do not put anything in it you would not put on your home page.

The benefit is uncertain. If an AI tool reads it, you have handed over a clear summary. If none does, you have lost ten minutes and gained a useful one-paragraph description of your business.

What would make it not worth it: paying someone a large fee for it, or spending time on it while the basics are missing. In order of value, the work looks like this:

  1. Make sure AI crawlers are not blocked. The AI crawler checker reads your robots.txt and shows, for 13 AI bots, which are allowed and the exact line that decided.
  2. Put your services, area, hours, prices and contact details in plain text on your website.
  3. Keep your business name, address and phone number the same on every listing.
  4. Make sure search engines know all your pages, with a sitemap. If you do not have one, the sitemap generator builds a sitemap.xml from a list of your page addresses.
  5. Then add llms.txt.

Our guide on making your business easier to find in ChatGPT covers steps 1 to 3 in detail.

How to make an llms.txt file in 10 minutes

You do not need a developer for this.

  1. Open the free llms.txt generator. Fill in your business name and one clear sentence about what you do. Say what, where and for whom: "Eggless cakes and mithai, baked fresh daily in Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur, with home delivery across the city."
  2. Add your details. City, phone number, opening hours, website address and your services, one per line.
  3. Add your key pages. The proposal expects links, so list three to six pages a customer would want, one per line, as name | address | short note: services, prices, menu, booking, location, FAQ. The address can be just the path, like /prices; the generator turns it into a full link under a ## Key pages heading.
  4. Copy the result into a plain text editor. Notepad on Windows or TextEdit in plain-text mode on a Mac. Do not use Word, which adds hidden formatting.
  5. Save it as llms.txt. All lowercase, nothing else in the name.
  6. Upload it to the top folder of your website, the same place as robots.txt. On cPanel hosting, that is usually the public_html folder in File Manager. On WordPress, some SEO plugins can create the file for you; otherwise upload it through your host. On Wix, Shopify and similar builders, adding a file at the root may not be possible. If so, skip it; you are not missing much.
  7. Check it. Open yourbusiness.in/llms.txt in your browser. You should see your text.
  8. Run the AI readiness checker. One of its eleven checks looks for llms.txt and confirms it starts with your business name as a heading and contains at least one link. It also checks the things that matter more, like crawler access and business details.

Update the file when your phone number, hours or services change. An out-of-date llms.txt is worse than none.

Common mistakes

  • Using it to block AI. Writing "Do not use my content" in llms.txt does nothing. Use robots.txt for that, and think twice: blocking search bots like OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot means those assistants cannot link to you.
  • Stuffing it with keywords. "Best dentist Pune, top dentist Pune, cheap dentist Pune" helps no reader and no machine. Write plain sentences.
  • Making claims your site does not support. If llms.txt says "open 24 hours" and your contact page says 9 to 8, you have created a conflict.
  • Linking to pages that do not exist. Click every link after uploading.
  • Putting it in the wrong folder. yourbusiness.in/files/llms.txt will not be found. It must be at the root.

The verdict

Does your website need an llms.txt file? Need, no. Benefit from, possibly, and at almost no cost. Treat it as the last item on your list, not the first. Check your robots.txt, make your pages clear, keep your details consistent, then spend ten minutes with the llms.txt generator, add links to your key pages, upload the file and confirm it with the AI readiness checker. If someone quotes you thousands of rupees for this, you now know what the job actually involves.

Frequently asked questions

Is llms.txt an official web standard?

No. It is a proposal published in 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI. Unlike robots.txt, it has not been adopted as a standard, and the major AI companies have not publicly confirmed that their assistants use it. Treat it as an optional extra that may become more useful over time.

Will an llms.txt file get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?

Not by itself. ChatGPT and similar assistants rely mainly on your web pages, what search engines know about you, and what other sites and reviews say. An llms.txt file is a tidy summary on top of that. Without the basics, it will not change anything.

Can an llms.txt file harm my website?

Very unlikely. It is a public text file that search engines do not use for ranking. The only real risk is wrong information, such as an old phone number, so keep it in line with your website and update it when details change.

Should I pay someone to create an llms.txt file?

There is no need. The free generator builds the file from a few details, and uploading it takes minutes if you can reach your hosting file manager. If you do hire someone, it should be a small part of a wider job, not a separate paid service.

Do I need both robots.txt and llms.txt?

robots.txt is the important one, because it controls which bots may read your site. llms.txt is optional. If you only have time for one, check your robots.txt and make sure it is not blocking Google or the AI crawlers you want to reach you.
