Free SEO Audit as a Lead Magnet: How Agencies Use It

By Neha

A free SEO audit lead magnet is a short website check you offer on your own site in exchange for a visitor's name and phone number or email. The visitor learns what is wrong with their website in seconds, and you get a lead who already knows they have a problem and that you can explain it.

It is one of the oldest tricks in agency marketing, and it still works because it gives the prospect something useful before asking for anything. This guide covers how to set one up, where to put it, and, most importantly, what to do in the hours after someone fills it in. That last part is where most agencies lose the lead.

What is a free SEO audit lead magnet?

It is a form on your website that runs a quick automatic check of the visitor's own site and shows them the result, while saving their contact details for you.

The idea is simple. A business owner lands on your services page. Instead of a vague "Contact us" box, they see "Get a free SEO check of your website". They type their website, their name and their WhatsApp number. Twenty seconds later they see a score and the three biggest problems on their site. You now know who they are, what their website is, and what is broken on it.

Compare that with a normal enquiry form. A normal form tells you someone is interested. An audit form tells you someone is interested, gives you a reason to call them, and hands you the first thing to say: "I saw your check this morning. Your site's titles say Home on every page. Shall I show you what that costs you?"

The audit itself is not the product. It is a conversation starter. The full audit, the proposal and the monthly work are what you sell. Keep that in mind, because it changes how much the free check needs to show: enough to prove there is a problem, not so much that the owner thinks they can fix everything alone.

Why does an audit form work better than a contact form?

Because it answers the visitor's real question, "Is something wrong with my website?", before they have to talk to a salesperson.

Plenty of business owners have had cold calls promising "first page on Google", and some hold back from contact forms because they expect a pushy call in return. An audit form changes the deal: they get something useful first, and they decide whether to talk.

It also filters for you. Someone who types their website into an audit form owns or runs a website, cares about it enough to check, and is curious about what is wrong. That is a better lead than someone who downloaded a generic ebook.

There are honest limits. An audit form will not create demand by itself. If nobody visits your website, nobody fills in the form. It works best alongside the outreach you already do: you can put a link to your form in your WhatsApp Business catalogue, your Instagram bio, your email signature and your proposal footer. Our guide on how to get SEO clients covers the outreach that brings people to it.

How to set up Upgrowly's audit form

Upgrowly's "Audit form and leads" page in your account builds the form, gives you one line of code to paste, and collects the leads. It comes with a free account.

  1. Open Audit form and leads in your Upgrowly account.
  2. Brand the form. Set the heading (the default is "Get a free SEO check of your website"), the button text, the button colour and, if you like, your logo as a PNG, JPEG or WebP under 100 KB.
  3. List your websites. Add up to 10 websites where the form may appear, one per line. Subdomains such as www are included. Add localhost if you want to test it on your own computer first. The form will not load on any site not on the list, so nobody can copy your code onto their page.
  4. Save and copy the code. You get one script line to paste where the form should appear, and an iframe version for website builders that do not allow scripts.
  5. Try it. The settings page shows a preview of your saved form. A check you run there counts as a lead too, so you can see exactly what a visitor sees.

On a free account the form runs up to 5 checks a day and shows a small "Free SEO check by Upgrowly" link. Any paid plan removes the link: Starter (₹499 a month) allows 25 checks a day, Pro (₹1,499) 75 and Agency (₹2,999) 200. Each visitor can run up to 3 checks a day across every form.

What does the visitor see, and what do you get?

The visitor sees a score, a grade and their three biggest problems. You get their details in your leads list, with a WhatsApp link.

The visitor fills in their website, their name, and at least one of email or WhatsApp number, then ticks a box agreeing that you may contact them about the check. The form checks their home page, which takes about 20 seconds. They then see:

  • A score out of 100 and a grade.
  • The biggest problems found, up to three, worst first, each with a one-line fix.
  • How many more problems the full report has.
  • A thank-you message saying you will get in touch with the full report.

In your account, each lead shows the date, name, email and phone, the website checked, its score, and the page your form was on. The phone number has a WhatsApp link next to it. The account shows the latest 100 leads, and the spreadsheet download has up to 5,000.

One thing it does not do yet: it does not email you when a lead arrives. There is a field to save an email address for when alerts are switched on, but today you need to open the leads list yourself. Set a habit, such as checking at 11 am and 5 pm, so no lead waits overnight.

Where should you put the form on your website?

Put it where people who already want SEO help are reading: your SEO services page, your contact page and your best blog posts.

Some placements that make sense for a freelancer or small agency:

  • The SEO services page, directly below the description of what you do. Someone reading about your services is the warmest visitor you have.
  • The contact page, next to your phone number and WhatsApp button. Some people would rather run a check than call.
  • Blog posts about website problems, such as a post on slow websites or missing Google listings. Add a line like "Want to know if your site has this problem? Run the free check below."
  • A dedicated page such as yoursite.in/free-seo-check, which you can link from your Instagram bio, WhatsApp Business profile and email signature.

When you share that page on different channels, tag each link with the campaign link builder so your analytics show whether Instagram or WhatsApp sent more people. Avoid pop-ups that cover the page the moment it loads. They are especially annoying on a phone screen, which is how many owners will see your site.

How to follow up a lead from the form

Reply the same day, on WhatsApp if they gave a number, and talk about their specific problem, not your services.

The lead's interest is highest right after they see their score. A reply three days later is a cold message. A reply the same afternoon is a helpful follow-up. Before you write, run the full free website audit on their site, so you know more than the summary showed them.

A first message that works has four parts: their name, the one problem that matters most, what it costs them in plain words, and a small next step. For example:

Hi Priya, thanks for running the free check on sharmaoptics.in this morning. The biggest issue is that your page titles say "Home" instead of something like "Opticians in Pune", so Google has little idea what to show you for. I have looked at the rest of the site too. Would a 10-minute call tomorrow suit you, or shall I send a one-page summary here?

If there is no reply, send one more message after two or three days with a new observation, then stop. The cold outreach message writer builds a WhatsApp message, an email and a follow-up from the real problems on a site, which saves time when several leads arrive at once.

Never promise rankings, never send a long list of services, and never add the person to a broadcast list they did not ask for. They agreed to be contacted about the check, so keep it to that.

From free check to paying client

The free check opens the door; a short paid first step closes the deal.

Once the lead agrees to talk, move through three steps:

  1. Show the full picture. Walk them through the full audit on a call or in person. Explain the three or four problems that cost them customers, in their language, and skip the rest. Our guide on how to do an SEO audit covers what to look at beyond the automatic check.
  2. Send a proposal within a day. Put what you found, what you will fix first and what it costs on two pages. The SEO proposal generator turns your audit findings into a printable proposal, and our guide on how to write an SEO proposal explains each section.
  3. Offer a small first step. A one-time fix-up of the problems the check found, or a one-month trial, is easier to say yes to than a 12-month retainer.

If you want the full audit to arrive as a branded PDF with your logo instead of ours, that is what Upgrowly's white-label client reports are for. Many freelancers simply share their screen on a call, which works just as well for a first meeting.

Keep a simple count each month in a spreadsheet: checks run, leads you replied to, calls booked and clients won. After two or three months you will see where leads drop off, which tells you whether to change the form's placement, your first message or your offer.

Frequently asked questions

Is offering a free SEO audit a good way to get clients?

Yes, when you follow up quickly and personally. The audit gives you a specific reason to contact someone and a first problem to talk about. It does not replace outreach, though: it only works if people visit the page where your form sits.

What should a free SEO audit include?

Enough to prove there is a real problem: a score, the few most serious issues and a plain fix for each. Leave the full list, the priorities and the plan for your call or proposal. That is the part you are paid for.

Does Upgrowly's audit form send me an email for each lead?

No, not yet. Leads appear in the Audit form and leads page of your account and in the spreadsheet download. You can save an email address for when alerts are switched on, but until then, check the list at set times each day.

Can I remove the Upgrowly branding from the form?

Yes, on any paid plan. A free account shows a small "Free SEO check by Upgrowly" link under the form. Starter, Pro and Agency remove the link and show only your logo, colour and text, with higher daily limits.

What if someone uses the form to check a competitor's website?

It happens. The form checks any public website, and each visitor can run up to 3 checks a day. A lead who checked a competitor still told you they care about SEO in that trade, so a polite message asking about their own business is still worth sending.
