SEO Cost in India: Monthly Packages and Fair Prices
By Neha
One agency offers SEO for ₹2,999 a month. Another quotes ₹40,000. A freelancer on Instagram promises "page one in 30 days". If you run a clinic, a coaching centre or a shop, it is hard to know which of these is fair and which is a waste of money. The SEO cost in India varies so much because "SEO" can mean anything from a monthly report nobody reads to real work on your website and Google listing.
This guide explains what you are actually paying for, what typical monthly prices look like in 2026, and how to spot the quotes that should make you walk away. The figures are market estimates, not fixed rates. Use them to ask better questions, not as a price list.
Short answer: Most SEO in India is priced by the hours of work behind it. A basic local package from a mid-level freelancer typically costs around ₹9,500–₹24,000 a month, and a package with regular articles and link building around ₹22,500–₹56,000. A one-time audit for a small site is often ₹6,500–₹16,000. Walk away from anyone who guarantees rankings or offers hundreds of backlinks for a few thousand rupees.
What are you paying for when you buy SEO?
SEO (search engine optimisation) means improving your website and online listings so that more people find you on Google without you paying for ads. For a small business, the work usually falls into six parts:
- Technical checks. Keeping the site fast, secure and readable by Google, and fixing broken pages.
- On-page work. Rewriting page titles, descriptions and headings so each page clearly matches what people search for.
- Local SEO. Looking after your Google Business Profile: photos, posts, services, and replying to reviews.
- Content. Writing useful pages or articles that answer your customers' questions.
- Links and listings. Getting your business mentioned on genuine directories, local news and partner sites.
- Reporting. A monthly summary of what changed and what comes next.
A fair quote tells you which of these are included and roughly how many hours each takes. If a quote only says "SEO package, ₹5,000", you have no way of knowing whether anyone will do anything.
SEO charges per month in India: typical ranges
SEO charges per month in India mostly come down to two numbers: how many hours the work takes, and the hourly rate of the person doing it. Typical 2026 hourly rates look like this:
| Experience | Typical hourly rate |
|---|---|
| Beginner (under 2 years, often supervised) | ₹500–₹800 |
| Mid-level (2–5 years, runs clients alone) | ₹800–₹2,000 |
| Senior (5+ years, strategy and recoveries) | ₹2,000–₹3,500 |
For a small local business with about 10 pages and one location, a basic package of technical checks, on-page fixes, Google Business Profile work and a monthly report takes roughly 12 hours a month. That gives:
| Who does it | Basic local package, per month |
|---|---|
| Beginner | ₹6,000–₹9,500 |
| Mid-level | ₹9,500–₹24,000 |
| Senior | ₹24,000–₹42,000 |
The price rises when the business is harder to rank. An online store with hundreds of product pages, a business facing strong national competitors, or a clinic (Google is stricter with health information) all need more hours for the same result.
What should SEO packages in India include?
Most SEO packages in India are sold as tiers. The names vary, but a fair version of each looks roughly like this for a mid-level freelancer working with a local business:
| Package | What it usually covers | Rough hours a month | Typical price a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic local | Technical checks, on-page fixes, Google Business Profile, monthly report | About 12 | ₹9,500–₹24,000 |
| Growth | Everything in Basic, plus two articles a month and genuine link and listing work | About 28 | ₹22,500–₹56,000 |
| Larger sites | E-commerce, many locations or strong competition | 50 or more | Often ₹40,000 and above |
Whatever the tier, ask for these in writing: the list of tasks, the hours or deliverables each month, who does the work, what access they need, and what you get if you stop. You should keep every page, article and login that was paid for. If you sell SEO yourself, our guide on structuring SEO packages in India shows how to build these tiers from hours.
Before the monthly work starts, many freelancers do a one-time audit, a full check of what is wrong with the site. For a small local site that is typically about 8 hours of work, so roughly ₹6,500–₹16,000 with a mid-level freelancer. You can also do a first pass yourself: our guide on how to do an SEO audit walks through it, and the free website audit shows in plain words what is stopping Google sending you customers.
Are affordable SEO services worth it?
Affordable SEO services can be excellent value, especially from a newer freelancer with a small, clear scope. A beginner charging ₹6,000 a month who reliably updates your Google Business Profile, fixes your page titles and replies to reviews may do more good than an agency charging four times that for a template report.
The problem is not a low price. The problem is a low price with a big promise. At ₹2,999 a month, even a beginner can give you only a few hours. If that price comes with "top 3 rankings" and "500 backlinks", the work is either not happening or is the kind that breaks Google's rules. Links bought in bulk from spam sites can harm your site rather than help it.
A useful test: divide the monthly price by a realistic hourly rate. If the answer is two or three hours, ask what exactly will be done in those hours.
How to judge SEO agency pricing and quotes
SEO agency pricing is usually higher than a freelancer's because you pay for a team, account managers and overheads. That can be worth it for larger sites. For a single-location shop or clinic, a good freelancer is often enough.
Whichever you choose, compare quotes on the same basis:
- List the services each quote includes, using the six parts above.
- Ask how many hours a month go into each.
- Divide the price by the hours to see the effective hourly rate.
- Ask for two or three current clients you can call, ideally local businesses.
- Ask what they will do in the first 90 days, in order.
If you want a fair benchmark before talking to anyone, the SEO price calculator works out a monthly retainer and audit price in rupees, with the hours behind each service. Freelancers can use the same tool to price their own work (our guide on what a freelancer should charge for SEO explains the method), and the SEO proposal generator turns their findings into a clear, printable proposal for a client.
Red flags in an SEO services price quote
Whatever the SEO services price, these should make you pause or walk away:
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody can guarantee a number one position on Google. Google's own guide, Do you need an SEO?, warns against anyone who does.
- Hundreds of backlinks for a small fee. Buying links to manipulate rankings is against Google's spam policies.
- Secret methods. A good SEO can explain every task in plain words.
- Fake reviews. Anyone offering to post reviews for you is putting your Google listing at risk.
- Keyword stuffing. Repeating "best dentist Pune" twenty times on a page does not help and reads badly to real people.
- They keep your accounts. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console and website logins should be in your name.
- Long lock-in with nothing to show. A 12-month contract with no monthly deliverables is a warning sign.
How long does SEO take, and will it pay for itself?
SEO is slow. Google's own hiring guide says it commonly takes four months to a year from the first changes to seeing possible benefit. That is why a clear plan and honest monthly reporting matter more than big promises in month one.
To decide whether SEO makes sense, work backwards from your numbers. Take a dentist in Pune paying ₹15,000 a month for SEO. If a new patient brings in about ₹3,000 of profit over their first year, she needs roughly five extra patients a month from Google search to break even. If that sounds realistic for her area, SEO may be worth it. If she would need fifty, the numbers do not work yet.
The SEO ROI calculator does this maths month by month in rupees, using your own visitors, enquiry rate and customer value. It is an estimate for planning, not a promise, and SEO growth is uneven in real life.
Can you do some SEO yourself?
Yes, and it lowers what you need to pay someone else. Much of local SEO is steady, simple work that an owner can do in an hour a week: keeping your Google Business Profile complete, adding photos, and replying to every review. See our guides to Google Business Profile optimisation and local SEO for small business. Setting up Google Search Console is free and shows which searches already bring people to your site. For a simple weekly plan, see our guide on how to do SEO yourself.
If your website itself is outdated, fix that first. Our guide to website cost in India explains what a rebuild should cost.
What to do this week
- Write down what you want from SEO: more calls, more walk-ins, or more online orders.
- Run a free check of your site to see its main problems before talking to anyone.
- Work out a fair price range for your business with an hours-based calculator.
- Get two or three quotes and compare them by tasks and hours, not by the headline price.
- Check that every quote avoids guarantees, bulk backlinks and fake reviews.
- Make sure all logins will stay in your name, so the SEO cost in India you pay builds something you own.
Frequently asked questions
What is a fair SEO price for a small business in India?
For a local business with a small website and one location, a basic monthly package from a mid-level freelancer typically costs around ₹9,500–₹24,000. A beginner may charge ₹6,000–₹9,500 for the same scope, and a senior consultant ₹24,000–₹42,000. These are market estimates. What matters most is that the quote lists the tasks and hours clearly.
Is ₹5,000 a month enough for SEO?
It can cover a small, focused scope from a beginner, such as keeping your Google Business Profile updated and fixing page titles. It is not enough for articles, link building and technical work all together. Be cautious if a ₹5,000 package promises top rankings or large numbers of backlinks, because that work is either not happening or breaks Google's rules.
Why do agencies charge more than freelancers for SEO?
An agency pays for a team, account managers, tools and office costs, and that shows in the price. You may get more people working on your account and cover when someone is on leave. For a single shop or clinic, an experienced freelancer is often enough. Compare both on the tasks and hours they commit to each month.
Can any SEO company guarantee first-page rankings?
No. Google decides what it shows, and it changes how it ranks pages regularly. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO warns against anyone who guarantees a ranking. A trustworthy SEO will promise the work, explain it and report on it, but not a position. Treat a guarantee as a reason to walk away.
How much does a one-time SEO audit cost in India?
For a small local website, an audit typically takes about 8 hours, which works out to roughly ₹4,000–₹6,500 from a beginner, ₹6,500–₹16,000 from a mid-level freelancer and ₹16,000–₹28,000 from a senior consultant. Larger sites with many pages or locations take longer. You can run a free first check yourself before paying anyone.
How do I know if my SEO is working?
Look at Google Search Console for more impressions and clicks, and at your Google Business Profile for more calls and direction requests. Most important, ask your customers how they found you. Expect slow movement for the first few months. A good SEO shows you these numbers every month and explains what changed.
