WhatsApp Link Preview Not Showing? Here Is the Fix
By Neha
You paste your website link into a WhatsApp group of 200 customers. Other people's links arrive as a neat card with a photo, a bold title and a line of text. Yours arrives as a bare blue address. No picture. Nothing to tap but a string of letters.
Or worse, a card does appear, and the picture is your cookie banner, or a stretched logo, or a photo from a blog post you wrote in 2022.
A WhatsApp link preview not showing properly is one of the most common small faults on business websites, and one of the most costly, because WhatsApp is where Indian businesses share links most. A link with a good preview gets tapped far more often than a bare one. The cause is nearly always four missing lines of code, and this guide walks through finding and fixing them.
Where the preview comes from
When you paste a link, WhatsApp quietly visits the page and looks in its hidden top section for a few labelled lines. These are called Open Graph tags, a standard that Facebook created and that WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Telegram, Slack and most other apps now read.
Four of them do nearly all the work:
<meta property="og:title" content="Sharma Sweets, Fresh Mithai in Lucknow Since 1984" />
<meta property="og:description" content="Order kaju katli, motichoor laddu and festive gift boxes. Same-day delivery across Lucknow." />
<meta property="og:image" content="https://sharmasweets.in/images/share-card.jpg" />
<meta property="og:url" content="https://sharmasweets.in/" />
The title becomes the bold line. The description becomes the grey text. The image becomes the picture. If these tags are missing, the app either guesses from whatever it finds on the page or shows nothing.
Step one: see what your page is really sending
Do not guess. Paste your address into the Open Graph checker. It shows how the link will look on WhatsApp, Facebook and LinkedIn, and lists which tags are present and which are missing.
You will land in one of four situations. Find yours below.
Problem 1: no preview at all
The tags are missing, or WhatsApp cannot reach the page.
Check these, in order:
- Are the tags there? If the checker finds none, add them. How to do that on each platform is covered further down.
- Is the image address complete? It must be a full address starting with
https://. A short path like/images/card.jpgworks for browsers and fails for many apps. - Is the site on HTTPS? WhatsApp often refuses previews for images served over plain http. See website security basics.
- Is anything blocking the visit? A robots.txt rule, a login wall, a "coming soon" plugin, or a firewall that blocks unfamiliar visitors can all stop WhatsApp from reading the page. The robots.txt guide explains how to check for blocks.
- Does the page redirect several times? A long chain of redirects can make the app give up.
Problem 2: title and text appear, but no picture
This is the most frequent case, and the image itself is nearly always at fault.
- The file is too heavy. WhatsApp is strict here. Keep the share image under about 300 KB to be safe. A 4 MB banner straight from a designer will be skipped silently.
- The image is too small. Below roughly 300 pixels wide, WhatsApp shows only a tiny thumbnail or nothing.
- The format is unsupported. Use JPEG or PNG. SVG logos do not work, and newer formats such as WebP and AVIF are not reliably supported by every app for previews.
- The address is wrong. Open the og:image address in a new browser tab. If the picture does not load there, it will not load in WhatsApp.
- The server is slow. If the image takes several seconds to arrive, the app stops waiting.
The image compressor brings a photo down to a suitable weight in JPEG, and the image SEO guide covers sizing in general.
Problem 3: the wrong picture, title or text
The tags exist but say the wrong thing, or the app is guessing.
- Every page shows the same card. The site has one set of tags in a shared template. Each important page needs its own title, description and image.
- The picture is a logo, an icon or a banner ad. With no og:image set, apps take the first image they find on the page. Set one deliberately.
- The title says "Home" or the theme's name. Nobody wrote a proper title for the page. Our guide on how to write a meta title and description shows how.
- Two plugins are both adding tags. On WordPress, an SEO plugin and a social sharing plugin sometimes each write their own set, and the app picks one unpredictably. Turn the feature off in one of them.
Problem 4: you fixed it, and the old preview still shows
This one drives people mad. You corrected the tags an hour ago and WhatsApp still shows the old card.
The reason is caching. Apps save the preview the first time a link is shared so they need not fetch it again. Each one handles it differently:
- WhatsApp has no public button to refresh. The practical trick is to add something harmless to the end of the link, such as
?v=2. WhatsApp treats it as a new address and fetches a fresh preview. Old messages keep their old card. - Facebook has a free Sharing Debugger with a "Scrape Again" button that forces a refresh. This also updates Messenger.
- LinkedIn has a similar free tool called Post Inspector.
Also clear your own website's cache if you use a caching plugin or a service like Cloudflare. Otherwise the app may be served the old version of the page.
The share image that works everywhere
One image, made properly, covers every platform.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Size | 1200 by 630 pixels |
| Shape | Wide rectangle, roughly 1.91 to 1 |
| Format | JPEG, or PNG for flat graphics |
| Weight | Under 300 KB |
| Safe area | Keep words and faces in the middle, away from the edges |
The safe area matters because WhatsApp sometimes crops the wide image to a square thumbnail, cutting off both sides. Anything important at the far left or right disappears.
What to put on it: a strong photo of your product, shop or work, your name, and at most one short line. Text should be large enough to read at the size of a postage stamp, because that is how big it appears in a chat. A plain logo on a white background is a wasted opportunity. The social post size guide lists the right dimensions for every platform if you need other shapes.
How to add the tags on your platform
WordPress. Yoast SEO and Rank Math both add Open Graph tags automatically. In the editor for any page, open the plugin's "Social" tab to set that page's title, description and image. Set a default share image for the whole site in the plugin's settings as well, so pages without their own still show something sensible.
Shopify. Under Online Store, Preferences, there is a "Social sharing image" for the site as a whole. Product pages use the product's main photo and title.
Wix and Squarespace. Each page's settings include a social share section where you upload an image and write the text.
Hand-coded sites. Paste the four lines into the head section of each page, with full https addresses. The meta tag generator writes the title, description and share tags together, with a live preview.
X, Google and the tags that are not Open Graph
X, formerly Twitter, has its own set called Twitter Card tags. It falls back to Open Graph for the title and image, but needs one extra line, twitter:card set to summary_large_image, to show the big picture. The Twitter card checker tests them.
Google search results do not use Open Graph at all. The headline and grey text there come from the page's title tag and meta description, which are separate. You need both sets. It is fine, and common, for them to say similar things. For the Google side, see how to write SEO titles and meta descriptions.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my link show a preview on Facebook but not on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is stricter about the image. The usual cause is a share image that is too heavy or not served over HTTPS. Bring it under about 300 KB as a JPEG and make sure the image address starts with https.
What size should the WhatsApp link preview image be?
Use 1200 by 630 pixels, in JPEG, under roughly 300 KB. Keep the important parts in the centre, since WhatsApp may crop the sides to a square.
How long does WhatsApp take to update a link preview?
There is no fixed time, as WhatsApp keeps the old preview stored. To see the new one immediately, share the link with a small addition at the end, such as a question mark followed by v=2.
Do Open Graph tags help SEO?
Not directly. Google does not use them for ranking. They help indirectly, because links that look good get shared and tapped more, which brings more visitors.
