How to Write Content for AI Overviews, With Before-and-After Examples
By Neha
To write content for AI Overviews, open each page and each section with a plain sentence that answers the question by itself, then back it up with specific facts, steps or a table. Google says you do not need a special style for AI, so the goal is not a trick. It is writing that a busy reader, or a system quoting one passage, can use without reading the rest.
This guide shows how to write content for AI Overviews through five before-and-after rewrites. Every example was written by us for this guide. The businesses are invented, and any prices are illustrations, not market rates or real results.
Short answer: start with the answer, name the subject in every key sentence, keep one idea per paragraph, use your own real facts with dates and sources, turn steps into numbered lists and comparisons into tables, and cut any sentence that only makes sense if you read the one before it.
What does Google say about writing for AI Overviews?
Google says there is no special way to write for its AI features: write unique, helpful pages for people, and normal SEO applies.
Google's guide to optimising for generative AI features is direct about this. It says "You don't need to write in a specific way just for generative AI search", that there is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces, and that "There's no ideal page length". What it does ask for is "non-commodity content": content with a unique point of view, created "based on what you know about the topic", and organised with paragraphs, sections and headings that help readers.
It also warns against one popular tactic. AI features may run many related searches for one question (Google calls this query fan-out), and it can be tempting to write a separate page for every variation. Google says content made mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses can fall under its scaled content abuse policy.
So read the rewrites below as clarity edits, not AI hacks. They make a page better for a customer reading on a phone. That they also make passages easier to quote is an observation from people who study AI answers, not a promise from Google. Our checklist for ranking in Google AI Overviews covers the technical and measurement side.
What makes a paragraph easy to quote?
A quotable paragraph answers one question completely, names what it is talking about and contains at least one specific fact.
Google describes a system called passage ranking that identifies individual sections of a page. Whether a passage is read alone by a ranking system, an AI feature or a reader who jumped to it from a heading, it helps if it stands on its own. Five traits do most of the work:
- The answer comes first. The first sentence answers the heading's question.
- The subject is named. "Our Baner clinic" rather than "we" or "it", so the sentence still makes sense when lifted out.
- One idea per paragraph. If a paragraph answers two questions, split it.
- Specific, owned facts. Your price range, your timings, your process, with the month you checked.
- No back-references. "As mentioned above" and "this" without a noun break when the passage is read alone.
The readability checker highlights long sentences and passive voice, which are usually the first things to fix.
Rewrite 1: the slow opening
Move the answer from the end of the introduction to the first sentence.
An illustrative AC repair company in Hyderabad has a page for the search "why is my AC leaking water inside".
Before:
Summers in Hyderabad can be brutal, and your air conditioner is your best friend. At CoolFix, we have been serving happy customers for many years with a commitment to quality. Many people face problems with their AC from time to time, and one of the most common is water leaking. In this article, we will explore this issue.
After:
A split AC usually leaks water inside the room because its drain pipe is blocked, the indoor unit is tilted, or the filter is so dirty that the cooling coil freezes and then drips. A blocked drain pipe is the most common cause and can often be cleared in one service visit. Switch the AC off and call a technician if water keeps dripping onto walls or electrical points.
The first version spends four sentences saying nothing a customer needs. The second answers the question in its first sentence, says which cause to suspect first and ends with a safety point. The technical details in a real rewrite should come from your own technicians, not from this example.
Rewrite 2: the vague "it depends" answer
Replace "it depends" with what it depends on, and give your own range.
An illustrative interior firm in Bengaluru answers "how much does a modular kitchen cost".
Before:
The cost of a modular kitchen depends on many factors. Every home is different and every client has unique needs. Contact us for a free quote tailored to your requirements.
After:
At our Bengaluru studio, a modular kitchen for a 2BHK flat typically costs โนA to โนB, based on our quotes from the last six months. Three things move the price most: the cabinet material (plywood costs more than particle board), the shutter finish (acrylic costs more than laminate) and the number of tall units and drawers. Prices checked October 2026.
Replace A and B with your own figures. The rewrite is honest about its source ("our quotes"), dated, and specific about the factors. A searcher can act on it, and it says something a generic article cannot, which is exactly the "non-commodity" point in Google's guide. If you will not publish prices, at least publish the factors and a typical example.
Rewrite 3: the back-reference
Make each paragraph name its subject so it still makes sense on its own.
An illustrative dental clinic page has a section headed "Is a root canal painful?"
Before:
As we discussed in the previous section, this procedure has changed a lot. It is much better now, and most patients say it is fine. Our doctor will explain everything before starting.
After:
A root canal is usually done under local anaesthetic, so most patients feel pressure rather than sharp pain during the procedure. Some soreness for a few days afterwards is common and is normally managed with medicines the dentist prescribes. At our Andheri clinic, Dr Rao explains each step before starting and checks in during the treatment.
The first version depends on the section before it ("this procedure", "it"). The second names the treatment, answers the question, adds a realistic caveat and ends with a specific, checkable fact about the clinic. For health pages, have a qualified doctor write or review the text, and note that the National Medical Commission restricts how doctors advertise; see our guide to SEO for clinics.
Rewrite 4: steps hidden in a paragraph
Turn any process into a numbered list with one action per step.
An illustrative pest control company in Pune answers "how to prepare for pest control at home".
Before:
Before our team comes you should make sure food is covered and also it is better if kids and pets are not there, and you should also empty the kitchen cabinets if we are treating for cockroaches, and after the treatment do not mop for some time.
After:
To prepare for a cockroach treatment at home:
- Empty the kitchen cabinets and cover or store all open food.
- Keep children and pets out of the treated rooms until the technician says it is safe.
- Cover the water purifier and any fish tank.
- After treatment, do not mop the treated areas until the time your technician gives you.
The list is easier to follow on a phone, easier to check off, and the structure survives if the steps are shown elsewhere. Use the exact times and safety instructions from your own service process and product labels.
Rewrite 5: a comparison written as prose
When a reader is choosing between options, give them a table.
An illustrative window fabricator in Jaipur answers "UPVC vs aluminium windows, which is better".
Before:
UPVC is good for insulation and also cheaper in some cases but aluminium is stronger and looks modern, though it can be more expensive depending on the profile, and UPVC needs less maintenance.
After:
UPVC windows suit homes that want better insulation and low upkeep; aluminium windows suit large openings and slim frames. The main differences, from our own installations:
Feature UPVC Aluminium Insulation from heat and noise Better Lower, unless thermally broken Strength for large openings Good Better Frame look Thicker Slimmer Upkeep Wipe clean Wipe clean, check seals
The opening sentence gives the verdict by situation, and the table carries the detail. Fill it with what your installers actually see, not with general claims you cannot stand behind.
How long should an answer paragraph be?
Google says there is no ideal length, so write the shortest paragraph that fully answers the question.
Google's guide is explicit that there is "no ideal page length" and no need to chop content into pieces. Our own house rule, for what it is worth, is that the first paragraph of a page answers the main question in under 60 words, and each section opens with one or two sentences that answer its heading. That is a style choice for readers on phones, not a number Google has published.
A useful test: read only the first two sentences of each section. If they answer the heading, the section is in good shape. If they are scene-setting, move the answer up. The heading checker lists all your H2 and H3 headings in one place, which makes this test quick to run on a long page.
What should you not do?
Do not write for a machine at the expense of the reader, and do not invent anything to sound authoritative.
- Do not make a page for every phrasing. Ten near-identical pages for "AC leaking", "AC dripping" and "AC water problem" is the pattern Google's scaled content policy targets.
- Do not invent statistics or reviews. A made-up "95% of customers" figure is a trust problem with readers and with Google's helpful content guidance, which stresses trust above the rest of E-E-A-T.
- Do not paste unedited AI drafts. Google's guide says AI-assisted content must still meet its Search Essentials and spam policies. Use AI for a first draft if you like, then add what only you know.
- Do not hide text. Content in tabs that never loads, or text inside images, is harder for anyone to use. Keep key facts in plain text.
- Do not stuff keywords. Write the phrase customers use once, naturally, near the top; then write normally.
A 20-minute edit for any existing page
You can apply all of this to one page in about 20 minutes.
- Write the question the page answers at the top of a notepad. Check it against real searches with the search intent checker.
- Rewrite the first paragraph so its first sentence answers that question.
- Turn each H2 into a question a customer asks, and make the first sentence under it the answer.
- Replace every "it depends" with the factors and your own range.
- Convert processes into numbered lists and comparisons into tables.
- Search for "above", "below", "this" and "it" at the start of paragraphs, and name the subject instead.
- Add the month you checked any price or rule.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to write differently for AI Overviews than for normal SEO?
No. Google says you do not need to write in a specific way for its generative AI features. Clear, answer-first, specific writing helps readers and normal search, and practitioners observe that it also makes passages easier for AI answers to quote.
Should every paragraph be short for AI Overviews?
Not necessarily. Google says there is no ideal length and no need to split content into tiny pieces. Keep each paragraph to one idea and put the answer first; length follows from the question.
Does adding an FAQ section help with AI Overviews?
An FAQ helps when it answers real questions customers ask, in the same answer-first style. Google says no special schema is needed, but the FAQ schema generator can label genuine questions and answers if you want structured data that matches the page.
Can I use ChatGPT to write content for AI Overviews?
You can use AI to draft, but Google's guide says AI-assisted content must meet the same quality and spam rules as any other. Add your own prices, process, photos and experience, and check every fact before publishing.
How do I know if my rewritten page is being used in AI Overviews?
Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page. Our guide on how to track AI Overviews explains how to read it alongside manual checks.
