How to Track AI Overviews: Is Google Showing Your Site?
By Neha
To track AI Overviews, start with Search Console's Generative AI performance report, which shows how often Google displayed links to your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Add a monthly manual check of your most important searches to see which pages and competitors are cited. Paid trackers can automate the manual part, but every one of them is a sample, not Google's own data.
This guide explains how to track AI Overviews with each of those three methods, what each one can and cannot tell you, and how to turn the results into something a client understands. One thing to say up front: Upgrowly does not track AI Overview appearances. Its tools help with the Search Console side and with your site's readiness, and we say exactly where below.
Short answer: open Search Console, go to Performance and then the Generative AI report, and look at impressions by page and date. Clicks from AI Overviews are counted in the normal Performance report, mixed with other clicks. For which searches show an AI Overview and who else is cited, you need manual checks or a paid tracker.
What does Search Console show for AI Overviews today?
Search Console has two relevant reports: a dedicated Generative AI performance report for impressions, and the normal Performance report, which already counts AI Overview clicks.
Google announced the Generative AI performance reports on its Search Central blog on 3 June 2026, first for a subset of sites. Its help page for the report says it was rolled out to all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026. Here is what Google documents:
| Question | What Google documents |
|---|---|
| Which features are covered? | AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search. Google may add more. Search Labs experiments are excluded. |
| What is measured? | Impressions: how often links to your site appeared in a generative AI feature |
| How can you break it down? | Pages, countries, devices and dates |
| Search type filter | Web: text, and Web: multimodal (Lens, Circle to Search and similar) |
| Will every site see it? | No. It may not appear if a site has not had enough impressions in these features |
| Can you export it? | Yes, chart and table data |
The help page describes impressions only. It does not describe clicks, queries or position in that report, so do not expect to see which search triggered an impression. Google also notes that the newest data may be preliminary and is shown as a dotted line.
Clicks live in the ordinary Performance report. Google's Performance report help page says a click on an external link in an AI Overview "counts as a click", that an AI Overview "occupies a single position" shared by all its links, and that position in AI Mode follows the same method as a normal results page. Google's AI features page confirms these are reported within the Web search type. There is no filter that separates them from other clicks.
How to read the Generative AI performance report, step by step
Open the report, set a three-month range, and read it by page rather than as one total.
- Open Search Console and pick the property. Google's help page gives a direct link to the report, and it is also listed under Performance.
- Set the date range to the last three months, so one unusual week does not mislead you.
- Open the Pages tab. These are the pages Google showed in AI features. Note the top ten.
- Compare with the main Performance report. For the same pages, check clicks and the queries behind them. A page with many AI impressions but falling clicks is a candidate for a stronger opening and a clearer reason to click through.
- Check countries. For an Indian business, impressions from other countries may be irrelevant; filter to India if that is your market.
- Export monthly and keep the files. You will want the trend later.
If you see no report at all, either your site has had too few impressions in these features or something is stopping Google using it. Google's guide to generative AI features says a site must be included in Search generative AI features under Search Console settings, so confirm that first. Our Search Console guide covers setup if you have not verified your site.
What Search Console cannot tell you
Search Console will not tell you which searches showed an AI Overview, who else was cited, or what the answer said about you.
Based on Google's documentation as of October 2026, these gaps remain:
- No query view in the AI report. The help page lists pages, countries, devices and dates, not queries.
- No AI filter for clicks. AI Overview clicks are inside the normal Web totals.
- No competitor data. Search Console only covers sites you own or manage.
- No text of the answer. You cannot see whether the AI Overview described your business correctly.
- Not listed in the API. The Search Analytics API reference lists search types for web, Discover, Google News, news, image and video, with no AI features type. Tools that read Search Console through the API, including ours, therefore cannot show the AI report separately.
Google Analytics does not fill these gaps either. Google's documentation does not describe a way to separate AI Overview visits from other Google organic visits. Our guide on whether AI Overviews reduce clicks shows how to spot the likely effect from click patterns instead.
How to check AI Overviews by hand
A fixed list of searches, checked the same way each month, shows you what Search Console cannot.
- Choose 15 to 25 searches that matter for the business. Take the question-style ones from your Search Console queries, plus the few searches that bring most enquiries.
- Search the same way every time. Use the same device type, signed out or in a private window, from the city your customers are in. Answers vary by person, place and day.
- Record five things per search: whether an AI Overview appeared, whether your site was linked, which of your pages, which other sites were linked, and whether anything said about you was wrong.
- Take a screenshot. AI Overviews change; the screenshot is your evidence.
- Repeat monthly with the same list.
| Month | Search | AI Overview? | Your page linked | Other sites linked | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example row | ac service cost hyderabad | Yes | /ac-service-price | 2 directories, 1 competitor | Price quoted from our page |
The row above is a made-up example of how to fill the sheet. After three months, the pattern is more useful than any single result: which searches you never appear for, and which outside sites keep being cited. Those sites are often your next listing or outreach target. If you also want to check ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants, our guide on checking your brand in AI answers extends the same sheet to them.
What do paid AI Overview trackers do?
Paid trackers run your keyword list through Google on a schedule and record whether an AI Overview appeared and whether your domain was linked.
Several rank-tracking and SEO suites now offer this, usually as an extra filter or report inside rank tracking. They save time when you manage many keywords or many clients. They are still samples: the result depends on the location, device and day the tool searched, and on the keywords you gave it.
Google is blunt about one limit. Its generative AI guide says "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems", and warns against tools that claim to use internal Google metrics. Before paying for any tracker, ask the vendor:
- Which locations can it search from? Can it search from an Indian city, not just "India"?
- How often does it re-check each keyword?
- Does it record AI Mode as well as AI Overviews?
- Does it show which of your pages was linked, and which competitors?
- Can you export the raw results for your own client reports?
We have not tested these products, so we do not recommend a particular one. Check each vendor's own documentation and pricing page, and use a free trial on your own keyword list before you commit.
Where Upgrowly fits, and where it does not
Upgrowly does not track AI Overview appearances, and it does not scrape Google results to try. It covers the Search Console and site-readiness side.
What the free tools do, as they work today:
- Search Console rankings shows your real Google clicks, positions and searches from your own Search Console, with read-only permission. AI Overview clicks are included in those numbers, but cannot be labelled as such, because Search Console's data does not label them.
- Search Console Insights lists pages that are seen but not clicked, and pages losing clicks. Those are the patterns to look at when you suspect an AI Overview is answering the question on the results page, though the tool cannot confirm that is the cause.
- AI readiness checker reads your own site, including robots.txt, llms.txt, the sitemap and the page, and gives a readiness score out of 100. It does not ask Google or any AI assistant about you.
- Indexability checker confirms a page is not blocked by noindex, nosnippet or a canonical problem, which would keep it out of AI Overviews entirely.
On paid plans, Upgrowly keeps rank history from your Search Console for watched sites and puts pinned keywords into the monthly client report. That is Google's own position and click data, not AI Overview tracking. For the Generative AI report itself, use Search Console directly and export it.
How to report AI Overviews to a client
Report what you can measure, label what you sampled, and never present a manual check as a ranking.
A simple monthly section that clients understand:
- AI impressions: total from the Generative AI report, compared with last month, and the top five pages.
- Clicks and click rate for those pages from the Performance report.
- Manual check: "Linked in 6 of 20 checked searches, up from 4", with the date, city and device you checked from.
- What changed and what is next: pages rewritten, pages planned.
If your manual check and the Search Console report disagree, say so; they measure different things. For the content work behind these numbers, see our guides on how to rank in Google AI Overviews and writing content for AI Overviews.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Search Console show AI Overviews?
Yes. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. Clicks from AI Overviews are counted in the normal Performance report, without a separate filter.
Why can't I see the Generative AI report in Search Console?
Google says the report may not appear if your site has not had enough impressions in generative AI features. It also will not show data if the site is excluded from those features in Search Console settings, so check that setting first.
Can I see which keywords trigger an AI Overview for my site?
Not in Search Console. Google's help page lists pages, countries, devices and dates for the AI report, not queries. Manual checks or a paid tracker are the only ways to see which searches showed an AI Overview.
Does Upgrowly track AI Overviews?
No. Upgrowly shows your Search Console clicks, positions and searches, finds pages that are seen but not clicked, and checks whether your site is ready for AI tools. It does not check Google results for AI Overviews.
How often should I check AI Overviews?
Monthly is enough for most sites. AI Overviews change from day to day, so a fixed list checked the same way each month, plus the Search Console report, shows the trend better than daily checks.
