FAQ schema is a small block of code that labels the questions and answers on your page, so search engines and AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini can read them as clean question-and-answer pairs. Since 2023 Google shows the big expandable FAQ results mainly for well-known government and health websites, so for most businesses this will not add dropdowns under your Google listing โ but it still makes your answers easier for machines to understand and quote.

Guide
How to use it
- 1Type each question the way a customer would actually ask it, for example โDo you deliver on Sundays?โ.
- 2Write the answer exactly as it appears on your page. The code must match what visitors can see.
- 3Use Move up and Move down to put the most common questions first, and remove any you do not need.
- 4Fix anything the checker flags โ missing answers, repeated questions or HTML Google ignores.
- 5Copy the code and paste it into the page that shows these questions, just before the closing </head> tag.
What the results mean
- FAQPage
- The schema.org type for a page that lists questions with one answer each, written by you. Use it for your own FAQ, not for forums where customers post answers.
- JSON-LD
- The format this code is written in. It sits in a <script> tag, is invisible to visitors, and is the format Google recommends.
- Rich result
- A Google listing with something extra, such as stars, prices or expandable questions. Structured data makes you eligible; Google decides whether to show it.
- Allowed HTML
- Inside answers Google reads links, lists, paragraphs, headings, bold, italics and line breaks. Images, tables and other tags are ignored, so keep answers simple.
Common questions
Will FAQ schema show dropdowns under my site in Google?
Probably not. Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. The code is still worth adding: it helps Google and AI assistants understand exactly what you answer, which can help them quote you.
Do the questions have to be visible on my page?
Yes. Every question and answer in the code must also appear on the page where visitors can read it. Marking up hidden text or answers that exist only in the code breaks Google's rules and can get your structured data ignored.
How many questions should I add?
Add the questions your customers really ask โ usually between three and ten. There is no bonus for length. Repeating the same question in different words only makes the page harder to read, which is why the tool flags near-duplicates.
Can I use the same FAQ code on every page?
No. Put each set of questions only on the page that shows them. Copying one FAQ block across the whole site counts as duplicate markup, and Google may ignore it everywhere.
