Best SEO Audit Tools in 2026: Free and Paid Compared
By Neha
The best SEO audit tool for most people is a free pair: Google Search Console, which shows what Google itself found on your site, and a crawler that reads your pages the way Google does. Add PageSpeed Insights for speed. Pay only when you need bigger crawls, scheduled audits or branded reports for clients, and then pick by the job: Screaming Frog for deep crawls, Semrush or SE Ranking for a full suite, WooRank or Upgrowly for client-ready reports.
We make Upgrowly, one of the tools below. We have tried to say plainly where the others do the job better.
Short answer: An SEO audit tool checks a website for problems that stop it appearing or doing well in Google: pages Google cannot read, broken links, missing or duplicate titles, slow loading, and pages that are blocked from search. No single tool sees everything, so the best setup is usually one free Google tool plus one crawler.
What does an SEO audit tool actually check?
A good audit tool checks four things: whether Google can find and read your pages, whether each page is set up properly, whether the site is fast and works on phones, and whether anything is broken.
In practice that means:
- Crawling and indexing. Is the page blocked by robots.txt or a noindex tag? Does it return an error? Is it in the sitemap?
- On-page basics. Does every page have its own title, description and main heading? Are any duplicated or missing?
- Speed and mobile. How fast does the page load on a phone, and do real visitors have a good experience?
- Links. Do links lead to working pages, or to errors and long chains of redirects?
There are two kinds of tool. Crawlers (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, Seobility, the audit inside Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking, and Upgrowly) visit your pages and report what they see. Google's own tools (Search Console and PageSpeed Insights) report what Google actually found or measured. You want at least one of each, because a crawler can only guess at what Google does, and Google's tools do not explain every problem.
No tool judges whether your content is the best answer for a search, or whether your business looks trustworthy. Those checks are still yours to do. Our guide on how to do an SEO audit shows how to read the results and what to fix first.

The best free SEO audit tools
You can run a solid audit of a small website without paying anything.
- Google Search Console. Google calls it a free service. Its overview lists the reports that matter for an audit: clicks, impressions and positions, which pages are indexed, URL Inspection for a single page, Core Web Vitals, and email alerts when Google finds a problem. It only works for sites you verify. Our Search Console guide covers setup.
- PageSpeed Insights. Google's documentation says it runs a Lighthouse test in a simulated setting and also shows real-visitor data from the Chrome User Experience Report over the previous 28 days. Upgrowly's PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals checker shows the same Google scores with the fixes in plain words.
- Ahrefs Free. Ahrefs' page gives 5,000 crawl credits per verified project per month, on as many verified sites as you like. Excellent for your own sites and clients who give you access, but you cannot use it on a prospect's site.
- Screaming Frog (free version). Its page says the free version crawls up to 500 URLs and restricts crawl configuration, saving crawls and advanced features such as JavaScript rendering.
- Seobility (free plan). Its pricing page lists one project and 100 pages a crawl at no cost, and its FAQ says you must wait 7 days between crawls.
- Upgrowly's free website audit. The website audit reads up to 25 pages of any website, three audits a day, with no sign-up. It scores on-page SEO, local SEO, mobile, speed, link previews and security, and explains each problem with the fix. Paid plans read more pages: 50 on Starter, 100 on Pro and 200 on Agency, from the limits in our own plan settings.
The best paid SEO audit tools
Pay for an audit tool when the site is big, the audits are regular, or the results go to a client.
Screaming Frog is the standard desktop crawler. The paid licence is £199 a year according to its pricing page, with no crawl limit beyond your computer's memory and storage. Best for large sites and migrations, if you are comfortable with a technical tool. Our Screaming Frog alternatives post compares the other crawlers.
Semrush includes Site Audit within a full SEO suite of keyword research, competitor research and rank tracking. Its pricing page lists the SEO plan at $139 a month, or $117.33 a month billed yearly. Choose it if you need the rest of the suite too.
SE Ranking lists Core at $129 a month, or $103.20 a month billed yearly, with 250,000 audit pages a month, on its pricing page. Its Agency Pack, from $69 a month billed yearly, adds white-label reports and a lead-capture audit widget. A good middle ground for small agencies that sell rankings.
WooRank focuses on instant website reviews. Its pricing page shows Pro at $89.99 a month with Site Crawl up to 2,500 pages, and Premium at $199.99 a month with 5 projects, white-label PDF reports and a lead generation tool. A Lite plan at $19.99 a month covers 100 page reviews and PDF downloads.
Seobility Premium (€59.90 a month) and Sitebulb are covered in more detail in our Screaming Frog alternatives post.
The best SEO audit tool for agencies and freelancers
For client work, the best audit tool is the one whose report a client can read without you explaining every line.
A crawl with 400 rows of response codes is useful to you and useless to a dental clinic in Pune. What clients need is a short list: what is wrong, why it costs them customers, and what you will do about it. Our guide to SEO reports for clients explains how to structure one.
Three tools above are built with that in mind:
- WooRank Premium for instant reviews and white-label PDFs, priced in dollars.
- SE Ranking with the Agency Pack if you also track rankings for clients.
- Upgrowly if your clients are Indian small businesses. The free audit explains every problem in plain words, and paid plans (Starter ₹499, Pro ₹1,499, Agency ₹2,999 a month, paid by UPI, card or net banking, with nothing renewing automatically) turn it into white-label reports with your logo. The free bulk website checker checks up to 20 prospect sites in one go.
What Upgrowly does not do: it is not a crawler for large sites (200 pages at most, on Agency), and it has no backlink index, no keyword volumes and no rank tracking for sites outside your own Search Console. For those, use Semrush, SE Ranking or Ahrefs.
How to choose the right audit tool
Pick by your situation, not by the longest feature list.
| Your situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| You own one small business website | Search Console, PageSpeed Insights and a free audit |
| You want a deep free audit of your own site | Ahrefs Free |
| You audit sites with thousands of pages | Screaming Frog (paid) or Sitebulb |
| You need keyword research and rank tracking as well | Semrush or SE Ranking |
| You send branded audit reports to Indian clients | Upgrowly |
| You want instant reviews and a lead tool in one dollar plan | WooRank Premium |
Whichever you choose, keep using the same tool for a client's monthly score. Different tools score differently, so switching tools can make a score jump or drop when nothing on the site changed. And whatever the tool says, work through the human checks too. The free SEO audit checklist covers what no crawler can judge, such as whether each service has its own page and whether the next step is obvious.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free SEO audit tool?
Google Search Console, because it shows what Google itself found on your site. Pair it with a crawler: Ahrefs Free for sites you verify, Screaming Frog's free version up to 500 URLs, or Upgrowly's free audit for 25 pages of any site with plain-language fixes.
Which SEO audit tool do agencies use?
A common setup is a desktop crawler such as Screaming Frog for depth and a suite such as Semrush or SE Ranking for rank tracking and reports. Smaller agencies that mainly send audit reports can use a report-focused tool such as WooRank or Upgrowly instead of a full suite.
How often should I run an SEO audit?
A full audit when you take on a site, after a redesign or migration, and then every month or quarter. Search Console's email alerts and a weekly automatic check, such as Upgrowly's SEO Watchdog (one website free, more on paid plans), catch sudden problems in between.
Is Google Search Console enough for an SEO audit?
It is the most important single tool, but not enough alone. It tells you what Google found, such as pages that are not indexed, but it does not crawl your site to list every missing title, broken link or duplicate description. Add one crawler.
Are free SEO audit tools accurate?
The checks are usually accurate for what they test, but each tool tests different things and scores them its own way. Treat a score as a guide, not a grade. What matters is the list of problems and whether fixing them helps real customers find you.
