How to Check if AI Assistants Mention Your Brand
By Neha
To check brand mentions in AI answers, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Mode the questions your customers ask, and record whether you appear, whether you are linked and whether the details are right. Then add the official data that now exists: Google's and Bing's AI reports in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and AI referral visits in Google Analytics.
No single tool shows every time an assistant mentions you. Anyone who says otherwise is selling a sample of answers as if it were the whole picture. What you can build is a reliable monthly routine, for your own business or a client's, that shows the trend and tells you what to fix.
Mentions, citations and visits: three different things
Before you test anything, separate three things that people often lump together. Each one is measured in a different place.
| What | What it means | How you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Mention | The assistant names your business in its answer | Manual testing only |
| Citation | The assistant links to one of your pages as a source | Manual testing, plus Google's and Bing's AI reports |
| Visit | Someone clicks that link and lands on your site | Google Analytics referrals |
A business can be mentioned without being cited, for example when ChatGPT names a well-known shop from what it learned in training. It can also be cited without being named in the text, when a page of yours supports one sentence. And many citations never produce a visit, because the reader got the answer already.
For most small businesses, being mentioned correctly for local, buying-type questions matters most. For publishers and agencies writing guides, citations and visits matter more.
Step 1: write the questions your customers actually ask
The quality of the test depends entirely on the questions. Write 10 to 15, in the words customers use, across five types:
- Category plus place: "best physiotherapy clinic in Aundh Pune", "wedding photographer in Jaipur under 1 lakh".
- Problem first: "my AC is leaking water inside, who repairs it in Gurgaon".
- Comparison: "[your brand] vs [competitor]", "which CA firm in Ahmedabad handles startup compliance".
- Your brand directly: "what is [your brand]", "is [your brand] good", "[your brand] reviews".
- Price and details: "how much does [your service] cost at [your brand]", "[your brand] timings".
Include Hinglish if your customers type it, such as "Andheri mein accha dentist". The near me keyword finder lists the local and Hinglish phrases people use for a business type, which makes a good starting list.
The brand questions matter even if you rank for nothing else. They show what an assistant tells someone who has already heard of you, and wrong hours or an old phone number there loses customers who were ready to call.
Step 2: run the tests the same way every month
Answers change between people, places, days and even repeated attempts, so a single test means little. Consistency is what turns it into a trend.
- Use the same questions, word for word, every month.
- Test where search is switched on. In ChatGPT, make sure the answer is using web search, so it can cite sources. Perplexity and Google's AI Mode search the web by default.
- Start a fresh chat for each question, so earlier questions do not steer the answer.
- Note where you tested from. Local answers depend on location. Testing from Mumbai tells you little about Pune.
- Take a screenshot of each answer and its sources. Assistants change, and a screenshot is your record.
- Test at least five assistants: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google Search with AI Mode or an AI Overview.
With 15 questions and five assistants, expect a couple of hours a month for one business. For an agency with many clients, split the questions and share the sheet.
Step 3: record the results in one sheet
Use one row per question, per assistant, per month. Keep the columns simple:
| Column | What to write |
|---|---|
| Month and assistant | e.g. November, Perplexity |
| Question | Exact wording |
| Mentioned? | Yes, no, or only in a list of many |
| Linked? | Which page of yours, if any |
| Correct? | Name, phone, address, hours, prices |
| Who else | Competitors named, and the sources cited |
After three months, two patterns usually appear. First, which questions you never appear for. Second, which outside websites keep getting cited for your category: a directory, a news site, a "top 10" blog, a marketplace. Those sources are your work list, because getting listed or mentioned there is often the most direct route into the answers.
Count, for each month, how many questions mention you out of the total. "Mentioned in 6 of 15 answers, up from 3" is a number a client understands.
Step 4: read Google's AI report in Search Console
Google now has a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. It shows how many times links to your site were shown in generative AI features on Google Search, currently AI Overviews and AI Mode, and lets you break that down by page, country, device and date. Google says it was rolled out to all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026.
Three things to know when you read it:
- It counts impressions of your links, not mentions of your name without a link. The help page describes impressions; it does not describe clicks or the searches that triggered them.
- The same activity is already in the main Performance report. Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as ordinary clicks there, so do not add the two reports together.
- Small sites may not see it. Google says the report may not appear if a site has not had enough impressions in these features.
If you have not set up Search Console yet, our Search Console guide walks through it. Our guide on Google AI Overviews eligibility explains what makes a page usable in those answers.
For a step-by-step walk through this report, manual Google checks and paid trackers, see our guide on how to track AI Overviews.
Step 5: read Bing's AI report in Bing Webmaster Tools
Microsoft added an AI Performance report to Bing Webmaster Tools in February 2026, as a public preview. It shows how your content is cited across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and some partner services: total citations, the average number of your pages cited, citations per page, and a sample of the "grounding queries" that led to them.
In June 2026 Bing added more views in preview: grouping those queries by intent and topic, a citation share showing what percentage of citations for a query went to your site, and a comparison with an earlier period. Bing describes citation share as an observational measure, not a ranking.
This is the closest thing to official citation data from any AI assistant today. Adding a site to Bing Webmaster Tools is free, and you can import a site already verified in Google Search Console.
Step 6: find AI visits in Google Analytics
When someone clicks a citation, the visit usually shows up as a referral. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links so sites can identify that traffic, though in practice not every link carries it.
In Google Analytics, open the traffic acquisition report and look at session source. Sources to look for include chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Note the monthly total for each, and which pages they landed on. Those landing pages show what the assistants find worth citing on your site.
Upgrowly's free Google Analytics visitor report shows visitors, channels and top pages in plain words, but it groups traffic by channel, so AI referrals sit inside the referral channel rather than being named one by one. For the source-by-source view, use Google Analytics itself.
Remember that visits undercount influence. A customer who reads ChatGPT's answer, then searches your name on Google and calls, never appears as an AI referral.
What about paid AI visibility trackers?
Several SEO software companies now sell AI visibility tracking. In essence, they run a list of prompts through assistants on a schedule and report how often your brand appears. That saves time when you track many brands, but it is still a sample: the answers depend on the prompts chosen, the location and account used, and the day.
Before paying for one, ask what prompts it uses, whether you can set your own, which assistants and countries it covers, and how often it re-runs them. If the answers are vague, your manual sheet may be more useful.
Upgrowly does not track AI mentions. Its free AI readiness checker checks the parts on your side: whether AI crawlers can read your site, whether your business facts are in plain text and structured data, and a few other basics, with a score out of 100. It never asks an assistant about you, so use it to fix your site, and the routine above to see the result.
What to do when you are missing or described wrongly
Work from the cause, not the symptom.
- Check AI crawlers can read your site. The AI crawler checker tests your robots.txt against 13 AI crawlers, including OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
- Fix wrong details at the source. Assistants repeat what the web says. Make your name, address and phone match everywhere with the NAP consistency checker, starting with Google Business Profile, Justdial and your own site.
- Write the facts down plainly on your site: what you do, where, prices, hours. Our guide to showing up in ChatGPT and AI search covers this step by step, and our Perplexity SEO guide covers Perplexity specifically. If ChatGPT keeps naming a competitor instead of you, how ChatGPT picks local businesses explains the likely reasons.
- Get onto the sources the assistants cite for your category, using your sheet from step 3.
- Use the feedback buttons on wrong answers. They do not fix anything quickly, but they are the official way to report an error.
Then test again next month with the same questions.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free tool that shows when ChatGPT mentions my brand?
No official one. OpenAI does not publish a report of brand mentions. You can test by hand, and you can see visits from ChatGPT in Google Analytics, where its referral links usually carry utm_source=chatgpt.com.
Does Google Search Console show AI Overview data?
Yes. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. Clicks from these features are also counted in the normal Performance report.
How often should I check brand mentions in AI answers?
Once a month is enough for most businesses. Answers vary from day to day, so a monthly test with the same questions, tracked over three or four months, shows the trend better than daily checking.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same question?
Answers depend on the wording, the conversation so far, the user's location and settings, which web pages the search finds that day, and some built-in randomness. That is why a single test means little and a repeated, consistent test means more.
Can I pay to be mentioned in AI answers?
Not in the organic answers. No agency can guarantee a mention. What you can do is make your site readable, keep your details consistent and earn mentions on the sources assistants cite, then measure the result with the routine in this guide.
