Perplexity SEO: How to Get Your Website Cited in Its Answers
By Neha
Perplexity SEO means making your pages easy for Perplexity to find, read and quote. Perplexity searches the web live for each question and puts numbered citations next to its answer, so the job is practical: let its crawler in, write paragraphs that make sense on their own, keep your facts current and get mentioned on the sites it already trusts.
Nobody outside Perplexity can promise you a citation, and this guide will not pretend otherwise. What it does is separate what Perplexity has documented about how it works from what SEO people have observed or guessed, and turn the documented part into a checklist you can finish in an afternoon.
Short answer: allow PerplexityBot in your robots.txt, check your firewall is not blocking it, write each section so one paragraph answers one question completely, show dates and real figures, and earn mentions on directories, news sites and lists that Perplexity cites for your topic. Start by checking access with the free AI crawler checker.
How does Perplexity decide what to cite?
Perplexity runs a fresh web search for each question, picks a handful of pages, writes an answer and links each claim to a source. Its help centre says it searches "the internet in real-time" and that every answer carries numbered citations linking to the original sources.
Perplexity has also published more detail than most AI companies. In a write-up on its search system, it says its index tracks over 200 billion URLs, and that it splits pages into self-contained spans that are each "individually retrieved and ranked" when someone asks a question. It uses both keyword matching and meaning-based matching, then reranks the best candidates with more careful models.
That one detail matters more than any tip list. Perplexity is not choosing your page as a whole. It is choosing a passage. A passage that answers the question by itself has a chance; a passage that says "as discussed above" does not.
What Perplexity has not published is a list of ranking factors. Claims you will see online, such as "Perplexity prefers Reddit" or "it always cites five sources", come from people watching its answers, not from Perplexity. Treat them as observations that can change from month to month.
Step 1: let PerplexityBot read your site
If Perplexity cannot read your pages, nothing else in this guide matters. Perplexity runs two visitors, and its crawler documentation describes both:
| Crawler | What it does | Follows robots.txt? |
|---|---|---|
| PerplexityBot | Finds and links websites in Perplexity's search results. Perplexity says it is not used to train AI models. | Yes |
| Perplexity-User | Visits a page when a user's question needs it | Generally no, because a person asked for the visit |
So PerplexityBot is the one to allow. Perplexity says robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to apply, and it publishes the IP addresses its bots use so firewall rules can match them.
Run the AI crawler checker on your site. It reads your robots.txt and tells you whether PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and ten other AI crawlers are allowed, with the line that decides each one. If you want to test one folder, or type a crawler name yourself such as Perplexity-User, use the robots.txt tester.
Also look beyond robots.txt. Security plugins, hosting firewalls and Cloudflare's AI bot settings can block crawlers without touching the file. If you use Cloudflare, check its bot settings once. Our robots.txt guide explains how the file works.
Is Perplexity safe to allow? The crawling dispute, briefly
Some site owners hesitate because of a public dispute. In August 2025, Cloudflare accused Perplexity of using undeclared crawlers that disguised themselves to get past blocks, and said it had removed Perplexity from its list of verified bots. Perplexity disputed this in its own post, saying much of the traffic came from a third-party browser service rather than from its crawler.
You do not have to settle that argument to make a decision. The question for a business is simpler: do you want to appear when someone asks Perplexity about your trade or city? For most shops, clinics, firms and agencies the answer is yes, because a citation is a link a customer can tap.
If you publish paid or original research and do not want it summarised, blocking is a fair choice. Just make it a choice, not an accident left behind by a security plugin someone installed three years ago.
Step 2: write passages Perplexity can lift
Because Perplexity ranks spans of text, write each section so its first two or three sentences answer one question completely. This is the same advice we give for Google's AI Overviews, and it helps human readers on a phone too.
- Use the question as the heading. "How much does GST registration cost in Pune?" beats "Our pricing".
- Answer in the first sentence. "GST registration through our firm costs ₹2,500, including the CA's review." Then explain.
- Repeat the subject. Write "Our Kothrud clinic is open 9am to 8pm" rather than "It is open 9 to 8". A lifted sentence must still say what "it" is.
- Put facts in text, not images. Prices on a photo of a rate card, or hours inside a PDF, are easy to miss.
- Use tables for comparisons. Packages, price ranges and service areas read well in a table, and the structure survives when a passage is pulled out.
- Name your sources. If you quote a government rule, link to the official page. A page that cites its own sources is easier to trust.
The prices in these examples are illustrations, not market rates. The readability checker shows which sentences are too long to survive being quoted, and the heading checker shows whether your page actually has the question-style structure you meant to give it.
For before-and-after rewrites of weak paragraphs, see our guide on how to write content for AI Overviews; the same edits apply here.
Step 3: be specific, current and dated
Perplexity's write-up says its system decides when to revisit pages and keeps refreshing popular documents. It does not say that newer pages rank higher, so do not invent publish dates or change them without changing the page. What does help is giving the reader, and therefore the answer engine, facts that are clearly current.
- Show a real "last updated" date on pages with prices, fees, rules or timings, and update it only when the content changes.
- Give numbers where you can. "Delivery within Ahmedabad in 24 hours, ₹60 below ₹500" is quotable. "Fast, affordable delivery" is not.
- Say where you work. List the cities and neighbourhoods you serve in plain text.
- Keep one page per topic. A single, well-kept page on "AC servicing charges in Hyderabad" is easier to cite than five thin pages saying the same thing.
For local businesses, keep your Google Business Profile, Justdial and IndiaMART details matching your website. When sources disagree, any assistant may repeat the wrong one. The NAP consistency checker compares the name, address and phone you paste in from each listing and shows which ones disagree.
Step 4: get mentioned where Perplexity already looks
For many questions, especially "best X in Y", Perplexity cites other websites rather than the businesses themselves: directories, review sites, local news, trade bodies and "top 10" lists. You cannot control those pages, but you can find out which ones matter for you.
- Ask Perplexity five questions a customer would ask, such as "best physiotherapy clinic in Baner Pune" or "CA for startup registration in Indiranagar".
- Open the sources Perplexity cites under each answer and write down the websites.
- Sort them: the ones where you could be listed (directories, associations, marketplaces), the ones that take submissions or pitches (local news, blogs), and the ones you cannot influence.
- Work through the first two groups. Claim listings, fill them in completely and ask happy customers to leave reviews there.
The business listing tracker gives you a checklist of 47 Indian and global listing sites, filtered by type of business, so you can track which ones you have claimed. Our guide on getting backlinks covers the honest ways to earn mentions from news sites and blogs.
What about schema and llms.txt?
Perplexity has not said that it reads structured data or llms.txt files when choosing citations. Both are cheap, so here is a fair way to think about them.
Structured data labels your facts for machines: business name, address, hours, prices, FAQs. Google documents how it uses it, and it helps search engines describe you correctly. Whether Perplexity uses it directly is not documented. Add it because it helps elsewhere, not because of Perplexity. The local business schema generator builds it for a shop or office.
llms.txt is a proposed file that summarises your site for AI tools. No major AI company, Perplexity included, has said its search uses it. Our guide on whether you need an llms.txt file gives the full picture.
The AI readiness checker looks at both, together with crawler access, headings, text and contact details, and gives a score out of 100. It checks your site only. It does not ask Perplexity anything, so it cannot tell you whether you are being cited.
How to check whether Perplexity cites you
There is no Perplexity dashboard for website owners, so test by hand once a month and keep a simple sheet.
| Column | What to note |
|---|---|
| Question | The exact words you typed |
| Date | Answers change, so dates matter |
| Mentioned? | Yes, no, or mentioned without a link |
| Cited page | Which of your pages was linked, if any |
| Other sources | The sites cited instead of, or alongside, you |
| Details correct? | Phone, address, prices, hours |
Use the same questions each month, and look for a pattern over three or four months rather than reacting to one answer. Our guide on showing up in ChatGPT and AI search uses the same method for ChatGPT, and the work overlaps almost completely.
You can also spot visits from Perplexity in Google Analytics. In the traffic acquisition report, look for sessions whose source is perplexity.ai. The numbers are usually small, but they are real people who clicked a citation.
What not to do
- Do not pay for "guaranteed Perplexity ranking". Nobody outside Perplexity controls its answers.
- Do not hide text for bots. Showing crawlers different content from people is a reliable way to lose trust with every search engine.
- Do not publish dozens of thin AI-written pages. If many of your pages say little, there is little worth quoting. See what ChatGPT can and cannot do for SEO.
- Do not forget Google. Perplexity is one assistant among several. Our comparison of SEO, AEO and GEO explains why ordinary SEO work is still the base for all of them.
Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity use Google or Bing results?
Perplexity says it runs its own search index, which it describes as tracking over 200 billion URLs, and its own crawler, PerplexityBot. It has not published a full list of data partners, so claims that it simply copies Google or Bing are guesses. Being well indexed by Google and Bing still helps, because the same clear pages tend to be found by every crawler.
Should I block PerplexityBot?
Only if you do not want your pages summarised and linked in Perplexity's answers. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is used for search results, not for training AI models, so blocking it mainly removes you from those answers. Most businesses that want customers should allow it.
How long does it take for Perplexity to cite a new page?
There is no published timeline. Perplexity says robots.txt changes take up to 24 hours to apply, and its crawler decides for itself when to revisit pages. Expect days to weeks for a new page, and longer for the outside mentions that often decide "best X" questions.
Can a small business get cited by Perplexity?
Yes, especially for narrow, local or specific questions where few pages answer well. A clear page on your exact service, area and price can be the best available passage for that question, even against much bigger websites.
Does Upgrowly track Perplexity citations?
No. Upgrowly's free tools check whether AI crawlers can read your site and whether your pages are clear and well labelled. They never query Perplexity or any other assistant, so use the monthly manual test above to see what Perplexity actually says.
