Local Citation Building in India: A List of Free Business Listing Sites
By Neha
Local citation building is the work of listing a business, with exactly the same name, address and phone number, on the directories, maps and review sites where its customers look. In India the short list that matters is Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Justdial, Sulekha or IndiaMART depending on the trade, and the trade's own platform such as Practo or Tripadvisor, plus the business's own social profiles. Every site in our list below could be joined free when we checked.
This guide is written for SEO freelancers and agencies doing citation work for local clients, and for owners doing it themselves. It covers what citations actually do (and what Google does not say they do), a list of free sites we checked in October 2026, a workflow you can repeat for every client, and how to clean up the mess an old listing leaves behind.
What is a local citation, and does it still help local SEO?
A local citation is any mention of a business's name, address and phone number (often shortened to NAP) on another website, usually a directory or map. It helps in two clear ways: customers find the business there, and every listing that matches the Google profile makes the business's details look settled and trustworthy.
It is worth being precise about what Google says. Google's page on local ranking names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. On prominence, it says it uses information such as how many websites link to the business and how many reviews it has. It does not mention directories by name. So be honest with clients: citations are not a ranking switch. They are housekeeping that removes confusion, plus real visibility on sites that Indian customers actually use, such as Justdial for local services or Practo for doctors.
That is also why quality beats quantity. Google's spam policies list "low-quality directory or bookmark site links" as an example of link spam. A client gains nothing from 300 listings on sites nobody visits, and loses a lot of time when they move and have to update them all.
Which free business listing sites matter in India?
Start with the maps, then the general Indian directories, then the trade's own platform. We opened each official page below in October 2026 and confirmed that a business can join without paying. Most are freemium: the basic listing is free and paid plans buy more visibility. Plans change, so check each site before you promise a client anything.
| Site | Who it suits | Cost to start | Checked on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Every local business | Free, as Google's own FAQ states | Google's India page |
| Bing Places | Every local business | Free; can import from Google | Bing's October 2025 announcement |
| Apple Business Connect | Every local business | Free | Apple newsroom |
| Justdial | Local services, shops, clinics | Free listing, paid upgrades | Justdial free listing page |
| Sulekha | Home services, tutors, professionals, events | Free listing, premium tier | Sulekha home page |
| IndiaMART | Manufacturers, wholesalers, B2B suppliers | Free registration, paid plans | IndiaMART seller page |
| TradeIndia | B2B suppliers and exporters | Free sign-up, paid memberships | TradeIndia join page |
| Practo | Doctors, dentists, clinics | Free profile | Practo help centre |
| Tripadvisor | Hotels, homestays, restaurants | Free to claim | Tripadvisor owners page |
A few notes from checking. Bing moved its owner portal from bingplaces.com to bing.com/forbusiness in late 2025. Apple's announcement is from 2023 and did not confirm availability in India, so check when you sign up. Practo says a profile that is not confirmed for a while can expire, so put a reminder in the client's calendar.
We left out sites we could not confirm on the day, including several older Indian directories and map apps that often appear in long "citation lists". If a client already has a listing on one of them, keep it accurate; just do not spend hours creating new ones.
How do you choose citation sites for a specific client?
Pick by where that trade's customers actually look, not by a generic list. A plumber, a CA and a steel supplier need different sites after the first three.
A practical order:
- Maps first, for everyone: Google, Bing, Apple. These are where "near me" searches end.
- One or two general Indian directories: Justdial for most local services and shops; Sulekha for home services, tutors and professionals; IndiaMART and TradeIndia for B2B.
- The trade platform: Practo for health, Tripadvisor and the booking sites for hotels, Zomato and Swiggy for restaurants, property portals for real estate, wedding directories for photographers and decorators.
- Social profiles: a Facebook Page and an Instagram profile with the same name, address and phone in the bio.
- Genuinely local sources: the market association, the chamber of commerce, the society or trade body the client belongs to. These are often the best links of all because they are real.
The business listing tracker has a checklist of 47 Indian and global sites filtered by business type and marked by priority, so you can see which ones apply to a client in a minute. It does not submit listings for you; you open each site yourself.
What is a good citation building workflow for agencies?
Lock the details first, then create or claim listings in priority order, then check every one against the master copy. Most citation problems come from typing the details slightly differently each time.
- Write a master NAP sheet with the client: legal business name as on the signboard, full address with landmark and PIN code, one main phone number, website, hours, categories and a 750-character description. The business info kit takes the details once and gives you matching copies for the website, Google, Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and WhatsApp.
- Search for existing listings before creating anything. Many Indian businesses already have a Justdial page someone made years ago, or a duplicate Google listing. Claim and correct, do not duplicate.
- Create or claim in priority order: maps, then directories, then the trade platform, then social.
- Use the client's own email and phone for every account, and keep a shared record of logins. Never register listings in your own name; when the client leaves, the listings must stay with them.
- Record each listing's URL and status in the tracker as "submitted", "live" or "needs fix".
- Check consistency once everything is live. Paste each listing's details into the NAP consistency checker to see which ones disagree with the master sheet and exactly what to change.
For a Justdial, IndiaMART or Sulekha listing that already exists, the directory listing scorecard scores it out of 100 and gives a fix list in order of importance.
How do you fix wrong or duplicate listings?
Fix Google first, then work outwards, and never leave two listings for the same location. Wrong details usually come from a move, a changed phone number or a listing someone created without the owner knowing.
- Old address after a move: update Google, then every directory in the master sheet. On Justdial and similar sites, claim the listing with the business phone number and edit it; if the old listing cannot be claimed, use the site's own report or edit option.
- Duplicate Google listings: keep the one with the most reviews and the correct details, and report the other through Google's own tools. Our guide on why a business is not showing on Google Maps covers duplicates and suspensions.
- Different phone numbers: pick one main number and use it everywhere. A tracking number on one site and a mobile number on another is a common reason details disagree.
- Name variations: "Sharma Electricals", "Sharma Electrical Works" and "Sharma Electricals Pvt Ltd" look like three businesses. Use the signboard name everywhere.
The Google listing scorecard helps you check the Google profile itself before you start on the directories.
How should agencies price and report citation work?
Price citation work by the hours it really takes, and report it as a finished checklist, not as a count of links. A client cares that customers can find the right number on Justdial, not that you built 40 citations.
The time goes into finding old listings, waiting for verification calls and OTPs, and chasing the client for photos and documents. For a single-location local business with a short list of the sites above, that is a defined one-off project followed by a light check every few months. Work out the hours honestly with the SEO price calculator, and see how to price SEO services for the reasoning behind a quote.
When you report, show the client a simple table: each site, its status, the live link and the date checked. If you send monthly client reports, the listing status sits naturally next to the Google profile and website checks. What citation building mistakes should you avoid?
Most of the harm comes from shortcuts that save an afternoon and cost months.
- Buying bulk directory packages. Hundreds of listings on sites nobody uses, created with details you cannot update later. Google's spam policies call out low-quality directory links.
- Registering listings under your own email. The client loses control of their own business details when you part ways.
- Using a virtual office or a relative's address to appear in a new area. It breaks Google's guidelines and creates listings that disagree with reality.
- Keyword-stuffed business names such as "Sharma Electricals Best Electrician Pune" on directories. They disagree with the Google name and look like spam.
- Forgetting the client's own website. The contact page and footer are citations too. They should match the master sheet exactly.

Frequently asked questions
What are local citations in SEO?
A local citation is any mention of a business's name, address and phone number on another website, usually a directory, map or review site. They help customers find the business and help search engines trust that the details are correct.
Which are the best free business listing sites in India?
For almost every local business: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Justdial, plus the business's Facebook and Instagram profiles. Then add the sites for the trade, such as Sulekha for services, IndiaMART for B2B, Practo for doctors or Tripadvisor for hotels. Each site in our table could be joined free when we checked in October 2026.
How many citations does a local business need?
There is no number to aim for. A single-location business is usually well covered by the maps, one or two Indian directories, its trade platform and its social profiles, as long as every one is accurate. Adding hundreds of low-quality listings does not help.
Do citations still matter for Google Maps rankings?
Google's own page on local ranking mentions links to the business and reviews as signs of prominence, and does not name directories. Citations matter mostly because customers use them and because consistent details avoid confusion about the business.
How long does citation building take?
The listing work itself is quick; most of the waiting is for verification calls, OTPs and postcards, which can take days or longer. Plan it as a short project with a follow-up check, not a monthly link target.
