Semrush Alternatives for Indian Freelancers (2026)

By Neha

The best Semrush alternative for an Indian freelancer is the cheapest tool that does the one job your clients pay for. For keyword and backlink research, look at Ahrefs or a budget suite such as SE Ranking or Mangools. For quick keyword ideas, try Ubersuggest. For audits and client reports priced in rupees, Upgrowly fits. Google's free tools cover the rest.

We make Upgrowly, so read this with that in mind. We say plainly where each of the others is the better choice, because for many jobs it is.

Short answer: A Semrush alternative is any tool that replaces the part of Semrush you actually use: keyword research, backlink research, rank tracking, site audits or client reports. Very few freelancers use all five every month. List the jobs you did for clients last month, then pay for one tool that covers them and use free tools for everything else.

Why do Indian freelancers look for a Semrush alternative?

Most freelancers look for an alternative because Semrush is priced in US dollars for a full marketing suite, while their clients pay them in rupees for a few specific jobs.

Semrush is a large platform. It covers keyword research, competitor research, rank tracking, site audits, content and advertising tools, and it runs its own databases to do that. For an agency with a team and big retainers, paying for all of it can make sense.

For a freelancer in Jaipur with four local clients, the picture is different. A dental clinic paying ₹8,000 a month (an example figure) does not need a competitor's paid-ads history. It needs a website that loads, a Google listing that is complete, and a monthly report that shows what changed. A dollar subscription can take a large share of what that client pays you.

There are also smaller reasons that come up often:

  • Card payments. Some Indian debit cards and UPI-only freelancers find recurring international card payments awkward.
  • Too much tool. Many people log in, use one or two reports, and ignore the rest.
  • Reports clients cannot read. Professional SEO terms need translating before a shop owner understands them.

None of this means Semrush is a bad tool. It means the right question is "which part of Semrush do I need?", not "what is the cheapest copy of Semrush?"

Semrush alternatives compared

The short version: Ahrefs for backlink research, SE Ranking for rank tracking with agency features, Mangools and Ubersuggest for cheaper keyword research, Upgrowly for audits and client reports in rupees, and Google's tools for real data on your own clients' sites.

We could not open the competitors' own pricing and feature pages on the day we wrote this, so we have left their prices out instead of guessing, and kept to what each tool is broadly known for. Check each company's pricing page before you buy, and convert dollar prices at that day's rate. Our Upgrowly vs Ahrefs vs Semrush comparison has the figures we checked earlier in October 2026, with links to each page.

Ahrefs: the closest like-for-like alternative

Ahrefs is the alternative to choose when backlink research and keyword data are the reason you pay for Semrush.

Ahrefs runs its own web crawler and its own keyword database, so it answers the same big questions Semrush does: what a site ranks for, who links to it and roughly how many people search a phrase.

The part most useful to an Indian freelancer is Ahrefs Free (earlier called Ahrefs Webmaster Tools). It works only for websites you verify you own or manage, but for those it gives a site audit and a view of the site's own backlinks and keywords. Once a client adds you to their site, you can use it on their behalf at no cost.

Where it is weaker: Ahrefs' free checkers give only a limited look at a competitor's or prospect's site, so proper research on sites you do not control needs a paid plan, and paid plans are priced in US dollars. Ahrefs is also built for people who already know SEO terms, so its reports still need translating for a client.

Choose Ahrefs if link building or competitor research is a real, monthly part of what you sell.

SE Ranking: rank tracking with agency features

SE Ranking is the alternative to choose when you sell rankings and need to show positions for many searches, across several cities, every month.

SE Ranking is a full SEO platform built around rank tracking, with keyword research, site audits and backlink data alongside. For agencies it sells an add-on called the Agency Pack, which adds white-label reports and a lead widget for your own website. The add-on sits on top of a main plan and is only sold with annual billing, so you pay for both, a year at a time.

For an Indian freelancer, rank tracking matters when clients ask "where do we rank for 'physiotherapist in Andheri' this month?" and expect a number every month, for every area they serve. Google Search Console gives you your client's own average position, but a rank tracker checks specific searches on a schedule, including ones the site does not yet appear for.

Where it is weaker: like Semrush and Ahrefs, it is priced in dollars, and the agency features cost extra. If you only have two or three clients, you may be paying for capacity you will not use for a while.

Choose SE Ranking if you run a small team, have several retainer clients, and rank reports are part of what they pay for.

Mangools and Ubersuggest: cheaper keyword research

Mangools and Ubersuggest are the alternatives to choose when keyword research is the only part of Semrush you really use.

Both are built to be simpler than the big suites. Mangools is best known for KWFinder, its keyword tool, and bundles a few related tools for search results, rank checking and links. Ubersuggest, from Neil Patel's company, gives keyword ideas and site data, with a limited free version; check its site for the current daily limit.

For a freelancer planning content for a coaching centre in Kota or a boutique in Ludhiana, this may be enough. You enter a phrase, see related searches with rough volumes, and pick the ones worth a page.

Two cautions apply to any keyword tool, including Semrush:

  1. Local Indian volumes are rough. Many searches like "ac repair Wakad" are too small for any tool to measure well. Treat the number as a hint, not a fact.
  2. Hinglish is often missing. People type "sadi" and "kahan milega", not only textbook English. Upgrowly's free Hinglish keyword finder and near-me keyword finder list those phrases, without volumes, so you can add them to your list.

Where they are weaker: neither replaces a full suite for backlink audits or large-scale rank tracking. Check each pricing page for the current limits before you rely on them for client work.

Choose Mangools or Ubersuggest if you want keyword ideas with volumes and nothing else.

Google's free tools: the data Semrush estimates

Google's own tools are free and give real numbers for the sites you manage, which is the data every paid tool is estimating.

  • Google Search Console shows the searches a site appears for, its clicks, impressions and average position, and pages Google could not index. Ask every client to add you as a user in week one. Our Search Console guide covers setup.
  • Google Keyword Planner lives inside Google Ads and shows rounded estimates of monthly searches. You need to finish Google Ads account setup, including billing details, to use it, and searches with very low volume are not shown.
  • PageSpeed Insights tests a page's speed and shows real-visitor data where Google has enough of it.

What Google's tools will not do is show a competitor's numbers. That is the gap Semrush and Ahrefs fill.

Upgrowly's free Search Console reports sit on top of this data. Search Console Rankings shows a connected site's real positions and the keywords almost on page 1, and Search Console Insights finds pages competing with each other, seen but not clicked, or losing clicks. Our list of free SEO tools for small business covers the rest of the free options.

Upgrowly: audits and client reports, in rupees

Upgrowly is the alternative to choose when what you actually sell is audits and monthly reports for local businesses, not research.

The free website audit reads up to 25 pages of any website, three audits a day, with no sign-up, and explains each problem in plain words with the fix. The prospect finder ranks a list of local businesses by how much their website loses them, with a short pitch for each.

The paid part is client reports: 12 report types with your logo, colours and contact details, as a PDF or a share link. Starter is ₹499 a month for 10 white-label reports every 30 days, Pro is ₹1,499 for 40, and Agency is ₹2,999 for up to 10 a day. A year costs ten months, payment is by UPI, card or net banking, and nothing renews automatically. A free account can make one white-label report a day.

Paid plans also keep rank history from your clients' Search Console: for watched websites whose owner connected Search Console, Upgrowly stores Google's own position, clicks and impressions each week, keeps 12 months, and puts pinned keywords in the monthly report.

What Upgrowly does not do, plainly:

  • No rank tracker for competitors, prospects or any site outside your Search Console.
  • No keyword search volumes and no backlink index. The authority checker gives only an Open PageRank score.
  • No live or map-pack rankings.

If clients pay you for those, pair Upgrowly with Ahrefs, SE Ranking or Semrush itself.

Which Semrush alternative should you choose?

Match the tool to the work your clients pay for, not to the brand.

Your situationBest fitWhy
You build links or study competitors' links every monthAhrefsIts own backlink index and keyword data
You sell rankings across several areas and need monthly rank reportsSE RankingBuilt around rank tracking, with an agency add-on
You only need keyword ideas with volumesMangools or UbersuggestSimpler and narrower than a full suite
You manage clients' own sites and want real dataSearch Console and Ahrefs FreeFree, and the numbers come from Google or your own verified site
You sell audits and monthly reports to local businessesUpgrowlyPlain-language reports in rupees, rank history from Search Console
You use Semrush's keyword, competitor and ads tools every weekStay on SemrushSwitching only adds work

That last row is a real answer. If Semrush earns back its cost every month, there is no reason to switch.

For many Indian freelancers the sensible setup is a mix: Search Console and Ahrefs Free for clients' own data, one paid research tool only once research is part of the retainer, and a report tool for what clients see. Our guide to the best SEO tools for freelancers shows example stacks by budget, and our post on how to price SEO services shows how to build tool costs into your fee.

Avoid "group buy" shared Semrush logins sold cheaply online. You do not control the account, it can stop working in the middle of a project, and you are trusting a stranger with your clients' data.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to Semrush?

No free tool does everything Semrush does, but free tools cover a lot. Google Search Console gives real search data for sites you manage, Ahrefs Free audits sites you verify and shows their own backlinks, and Upgrowly's tools are free with daily limits. Competitor research is the part that usually needs a paid plan.

What is the cheapest Semrush alternative?

It depends on the job. For keyword ideas, Ubersuggest and Mangools are usually cheaper than the big suites, and for audits and branded reports, Upgrowly Starter is ₹499 a month. Check each company's pricing page on the day you buy, since dollar prices and plans change.

Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?

Neither is better for everyone. Both run their own keyword and backlink databases, so the choice usually comes down to which extra features you need and which interface you find easier. For a freelancer, the bigger difference is often Ahrefs Free, which helps on sites you verify without paying.

Does Upgrowly replace Semrush?

Only for some jobs. Upgrowly covers site audits, plain-language client reports and rank history from your clients' own Search Console. It has no keyword volumes, no backlink index and no rank tracking for competitors, so if clients pay you for research, you still need a research tool alongside it.

Can I pay for SEO tools in rupees?

Upgrowly is priced in rupees and accepts UPI, card and net banking. Most international SEO suites list prices in US dollars and charge an international card, so your bank's exchange rate and any foreign transaction fee will change what you pay. Check with your bank before you subscribe.
