Best SEO Tools for Freelancers in India (2026)

By Neha

The best SEO tools for freelancers are a free Google base (Search Console, Analytics and PageSpeed Insights), one crawler, and one paid tool for the job clients pay you for. That paid tool is a research suite such as Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking if you sell rankings, or a report tool such as Upgrowly if you sell audits and monthly reports. Most freelancers starting out need far fewer tools than they think.

We make Upgrowly, so read this with that in mind. We have kept to what each tool's own pages say, and we say where the big suites are the better buy.

Short answer: SEO tools for freelancers fall into six jobs: Google's own data, audits and crawls, keyword research, rank and competitor tracking, client reports, and running the business (proposals, quotes, contracts). Cover the first two free, then pay for the one job your clients value most.

What SEO tools does a freelancer actually need?

A freelancer needs one tool for each job they do every month, and nothing for the jobs they do once a year.

Write down what you sold to your last three clients. If it was audits and monthly reports for local businesses, you do not need a $139-a-month research suite yet. If it was rankings for competitive searches, you probably do.

The free SEO tools every freelancer should use

Google's own tools are free, they are the most trusted data you can show a client, and every other tool is guessing at what they measure.

  • Google Search Console. Google calls it a free service. It shows the searches a site appears for, clicks, positions and pages Google could not index. Ask every client to add you as a user in week one. Our Search Console guide covers setup.
  • Google Analytics. Google's product page says it is free of charge. Use it to show visits and enquiries, which clients care about more than rankings. Our Google Analytics guide covers the five numbers worth checking.
  • PageSpeed Insights. Google's documentation says it combines a Lighthouse lab test with real-visitor data from the Chrome User Experience Report.
  • Google Keyword Planner. It lives inside Google Ads, and Google's help page says you must complete account setup, including billing information, to use it. It also says very low-volume keywords are not shown.
  • Ahrefs Free. Ahrefs' page gives a free Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per verified project per month, plus Site Explorer, for sites you verify. Ideal once a client gives you access.
  • Screaming Frog (free version). Its page says the free version crawls up to 500 URLs per crawl, enough for most small business sites.

Upgrowly's free tools sit on top of these. The website audit checks any site, including a prospect's, up to 25 pages, with each problem explained in plain words. The Search Console rankings tool shows your connected sites' real Google positions and the keywords almost on page 1.

Paid SEO tools: which suite is worth it?

Pay for a research suite when keyword research and competitor tracking are part of what clients pay you for every month.

UpgrowlyStarter, ₹499 a monthPro ₹1,499, Agency ₹2,999Audits and white-label client reports

Prices as of October 2026, from each company's pricing page, at monthly billing where shown: Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and Screaming Frog. Converted at ₹95 to the dollar and ₹127 to the pound (mid-market rates on 24 October 2026). Yearly billing is cheaper on most of them; for example SE Ranking shows Core at $103.20 a month billed yearly. Your bank's rate will differ, and tax may be added.

How to pick between the three suites:

  • Ahrefs has the lowest entry price. Check exactly what Starter includes on the pricing page before you rely on it for client work.
  • Semrush is a broad suite with the highest starting price of the three.
  • SE Ranking is built around rank tracking and agency use. Its Agency Pack, from $69 a month billed yearly, adds white-label reports, client seats and a lead widget.

Our Upgrowly vs Ahrefs vs Semrush comparison goes deeper on what each is built for. If Semrush is the one you are trying to replace, our guide to Semrush alternatives for Indian freelancers matches each option to the job you sell.

Tools for client reports and audits

If you sell audits and monthly reports to small businesses, a report tool earns its fee faster than a research suite.

For example, a client in Lucknow paying ₹8,000 a month wants to know three things: what you did, what changed and what happens next. A report built from Search Console and an audit, with your logo on it, answers that. Our guide to SEO reports for clients shows the structure.

Upgrowly's paid plans are built for this job. You get 12 white-label report types with your logo, colours and contact details, as a PDF or a share link: 10 reports every 30 days on Starter (₹499), 40 on Pro (₹1,499) and unlimited on Agency (₹2,999). Paid plans also store Google's own positions, clicks and impressions from Search Console for watched sites, keep 12 months of history and put pinned keywords in the monthly report. That is rank history from your clients' Search Console, not a rank tracker: it only covers sites you manage there.

What Upgrowly does not do: no backlink index, no keyword search volumes, no rank tracking for competitors or prospects, and audits stop at 200 pages. If clients pay you for those, add Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking.

Free tools for running your freelance business

Half of freelancing is selling and admin, and those tools should cost nothing.

Three example tool stacks by budget

These are illustrations built from the prices above, not recommendations for every freelancer.

  1. ₹0 a month, starting out. Search Console, Analytics, PageSpeed Insights, Keyword Planner, Ahrefs Free, Screaming Frog free, and Upgrowly's free audit, one free white-label report a day and business tools. Enough for your first few local clients.
  2. About ₹2,600 a month, audits and reports. Add a Screaming Frog licence (£199 a year, about ₹2,100 a month spread out) and Upgrowly Starter (₹499). Deep crawls for bigger sites and 10 branded reports a month.
  3. About ₹14,850 a month, rankings work. Add Ahrefs Lite ($129, about ₹12,250) to the second stack, or swap in Semrush or SE Ranking. Worth it once ranking and competitor work brings in more than the tool costs.

Avoid "group buy" shared logins sold cheaply online. You do not control the account, it can disappear in the middle of a project, and you are trusting a stranger with your clients' data.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free SEO tool for freelancers?

Google Search Console, because it is free and shows a client's real searches, clicks and indexing problems. Add Google Analytics for enquiries and a free crawler such as Screaming Frog (500 URLs) or Upgrowly's audit (25 pages, any site) for problems on the page.

Do I need Ahrefs or Semrush as a freelancer?

Only if keyword research, backlinks or competitor tracking are part of what clients pay for each month. Many local SEO jobs, such as fixing a clinic's website and Google listing, can be done with free Google tools and an audit tool. Buy a suite when the work needs it.

Which SEO tools are cheapest in India?

Among the paid tools here, Upgrowly Starter at ₹499 a month and Ahrefs Starter at $29 a month (about ₹2,750) are the cheapest monthly plans, and a Screaming Frog licence works out to about ₹2,100 a month. They do very different jobs, so compare by the job, not the price.

What tools do I need to make SEO reports for clients?

Search Console and Google Analytics for the numbers, an audit tool for site health, and a report tool to put your brand on it. Upgrowly's paid plans, SE Ranking's Agency Pack and WooRank Premium all make white-label reports. Our white-label SEO reports guide lists what to include.

Is Google Keyword Planner free?

It sits inside Google Ads, and Google's help page says you must finish account setup, including billing details, to use it. The same page says keywords with very low search volumes are not shown, which matters for small local searches.
