Upgrowly vs Ahrefs vs Semrush: Which Fits a Small Business?

By Neha

Search for "best SEO tool" and two names come up again and again: Ahrefs and Semrush. Both are excellent, both are priced in US dollars, and both are built for people who do SEO for a living. If you run a bakery in Indore or a CA practice in Lucknow, you may be wondering whether you need either of them, or whether a smaller tool like ours will do.

This is our honest comparison of Upgrowly vs Ahrefs vs Semrush. We make Upgrowly, so read it with that in mind. We have tried to say plainly where the other two are better, because for some jobs they clearly are.

Short answer: For a local business that wants to fix its website and Google listing, the free Google tools plus Upgrowly or Ahrefs' free plan are usually enough. Choose Ahrefs or Semrush when you need backlink data, search volumes for keywords, competitor research or rank tracking for any website, including your competitors'. Upgrowly has none of those. It gives plain-language website checks, a weekly history of your own sites' keyword positions from Search Console on paid plans, Google listing and Search Console reports, Indian-language keyword ideas and client reports priced in rupees.

What is each tool actually built for?

Ahrefs and Semrush are research platforms for SEO professionals; Upgrowly is a set of plain-language checks for business owners and the freelancers who serve them.

Ahrefs and Semrush each run their own giant databases. They crawl the web to collect links between sites, and they estimate how many people search for millions of keywords in many countries. Semrush, for example, has kept a separate India database since 2015. That lets you look up any website, including a competitor's, and see roughly what it ranks for and who links to it. Agencies use them every day.

Upgrowly does not own a database like that. It reads a website the way Google does, asks Google's own free services (PageSpeed Insights and, with your permission, your Search Console) for real numbers, and explains what it finds in words a shop owner understands. Its paid plans exist mainly for freelancers and agencies who want to send white-label reports to clients.

So these are not three versions of the same product. Ahrefs and Semrush answer "what is happening across Google?" Upgrowly answers "what is wrong with my site and listing, and what do I fix first?"

What can you do free with each one?

All three have a real free option, but the limits are very different. The figures below are from each company's own pages, as of October 2026.

  • Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools). Free for websites you prove you own. According to Ahrefs' free plan page and Webmaster Tools page, you get Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per verified project per month, Site Explorer showing up to 1,000 of your own backlinks and keywords at once, and web analytics. Looking at a competitor's site needs a paid plan.
  • Semrush free account. Semrush's pricing page lists one demo project and 10 reports a day across its main tools. Semrush's own guide to the free account adds a Site Audit of up to 100 pages and Position Tracking for 10 keywords. You can look up any domain or keyword, within those 10 a day.
  • Upgrowly free. Every tool is free. The website audit reads up to 25 pages of any website, three audits a day, with no account. The Search Console reports, such as Search Console Rankings, need a free account and read-only access to your own Search Console. Tools that call outside services have daily limits.

If you own your website, Ahrefs' free plan audits far more pages than Upgrowly's free audit does. That is worth knowing before you choose.

How do keyword data and backlinks compare?

This is where Ahrefs and Semrush are far ahead, and Upgrowly does not try to compete.

Ahrefs and Semrush can tell you roughly how many people search "chartered accountant in Lucknow" each month, how hard it is to rank for, and which sites link to your competitor. That is valuable if you plan content or build links seriously. Ahrefs' free plan shows this for your own verified site only; Semrush's free account allows a handful of lookups a day.

Upgrowly has no keyword database with search volumes. Its keyword tools work differently:

  • The Hinglish keyword finder and regional finder list how people actually type what you sell, such as "saree" and "sadi", or "kahan milega", without volumes.
  • The Search Console Insights report uses your own Google data to show which of your pages compete with each other, get seen but not clicked, or are losing clicks.

For links, Upgrowly has no backlink index. The authority checker gives an Open PageRank score, built from open Common Crawl data, which is a rough guide to how well linked a site is. It cannot show you who links to you. If you need that, use Ahrefs' free plan for your own site, or a paid plan for competitors. Our guide on how to get backlinks explains when links matter for a small business.

Which is better for local SEO and Google Business Profile?

For a local shop, the Google listing often brings more customers than the website, and none of the three reads public listings for free.

  • Ahrefs offers GBP Monitor, which its help centre says is free for subscribers on Lite or higher plans. It watches your own profiles for changes, lets you bulk edit them and shows calls and direction requests. It is still marked as a beta on the pricing page.
  • Semrush Local is a separate paid product. As of October 2026 its Local pricing page lists Base at $30 a month per location and Pro at $60, billed yearly, with profile management, review replies and a map rank tracker. Semrush lists India among the countries its listing management works for.
  • Upgrowly has a Google listing scorecard: you answer 26 questions about the listing and get a score out of 100 with a fix list. It does not connect to or read your listing, so the answers are only as accurate as yours. It also has a checklist of 47 Indian and global listing sites, such as Justdial and IndiaMART, and a festival hours planner.

If you manage many locations and want rank maps and automatic review replies, Semrush Local does more. For one shop that needs to know what to fix, the scorecard and our Google Business Profile optimization guide cost nothing.

What does each cost if you pay?

Ahrefs and Semrush charge in US dollars for data; Upgrowly charges in rupees, mainly for client reports. All prices are monthly, as listed on the official pages in October 2026.

  • Ahrefs (pricing): Starter $29 (monthly only, per Ahrefs' help centre, with 50 tracked keywords and one unverified project), Lite $129, Standard $249, Advanced $449 and Enterprise $1,499 with a yearly commitment. Paying yearly saves up to 17%.
  • Semrush (pricing): the SEO plan is $139 a month, or $117.33 a month billed yearly, for 5 websites and 500 tracked keywords. The next plans up start at $199. Semrush Local is extra.
  • Upgrowly (pricing): Starter ₹499, Pro ₹1,499 and Agency ₹2,999. A year costs ten months. Payment is by UPI, card or net banking, nothing renews automatically, and there is a 14-day refund.

Be careful comparing these numbers. Upgrowly's paid plans give higher daily limits, bigger audits (up to 200 pages) and white-label reports with your logo. They do not add backlink or keyword volume data, because Upgrowly does not have it at any price. They do add a weekly record of where your watched websites rank, read from your own Search Console and kept for 12 months, with the searches you pin carried into the monthly client report.

When to choose which

Pick by the job you need done, not by the brand.

Choose Ahrefs if:

  • You own your site and want a deep free audit and a list of your own backlinks. Ahrefs Free does this well.
  • You need to see who links to competitors, or research keywords with search volumes. The $29 Starter plan is a low-cost way in.

Choose Semrush if:

  • You want to look up a few competitors or keywords a day for free.
  • You are an agency with a budget that needs keyword research, rank tracking, competitor research and local listing management in one place.

Choose Upgrowly if:

  • You are a business owner who wants to know what is wrong with your site and listing, explained simply, in one place, at no cost.
  • Your customers search in Hinglish or regional languages and you want to see how they type.
  • You are a freelancer who needs branded audit and monthly reports priced in rupees, including how your clients' keywords moved, from their own Search Console. If you also want an audit form that captures leads on your own site, our MySiteAuditor alternatives post compares the options.

Many small businesses do best with a mix: Google Search Console and Ahrefs Free for data on their own site, and Upgrowly for plain-language fixes. If you are a freelancer building a full toolkit, our guide to the best SEO tools for freelancers suggests stacks by budget. Frequently asked questions

Is Ahrefs Webmaster Tools really free?

Yes. As of October 2026, Ahrefs calls it Ahrefs Free and charges nothing, but it only works for websites you verify you own. It includes Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per site a month and Site Explorer showing up to 1,000 of your backlinks and keywords at once. Looking at competitors needs a paid plan.

Does Upgrowly show search volume or backlinks?

No. Upgrowly has no keyword database with search volumes and no backlink index, and it does not track rankings across all of Google. It shows positions only for sites in your own Search Console. On paid plans it saves them every week for the websites you watch, so you can compare with 4 and 12 weeks ago, but it cannot show where a competitor ranks. It also gives an Open PageRank score as a rough link-strength guide. For volumes or backlink lists, use Ahrefs or Semrush.

Is Semrush's free account enough for a small business?

For occasional checks, it can be. As of October 2026 the free account gives 10 reports a day, one project, a site audit of up to 100 pages and 10 tracked keywords. That is enough to look at a competitor or check a keyword now and then. For regular rank tracking or many lookups a day, you would need a paid plan.

Can I use Upgrowly and Ahrefs together?

Yes, and for many owners it is the best free setup. Set up Google Search Console first, then verify your site in Ahrefs Free for a large audit and your backlink list. Use Upgrowly's website audit and Google listing scorecard for plain-language fixes, and its Search Console reports to spot pages losing clicks.

Why are Ahrefs and Semrush so much more expensive?

They build and update their own databases of web links and keyword search estimates across many countries, which costs a great deal to run. Upgrowly reads websites directly and uses Google's free services instead, so it can stay cheap, but it also cannot offer the market-wide data that justifies their prices for agencies and SEO teams.
