SEO for Hotels and Homestays in India: How to Get More Direct Bookings

By Neha

SEO for hotels is the work of getting a hotel, resort or homestay to show up on Google Search and Google Maps when travellers look for a place to stay, so more of them book with you directly instead of only through booking sites. For an Indian property it comes down to five things: a verified Google Business Profile in the right lodging category, live rates through free booking links, steady genuine reviews, a fast website that answers travellers' questions, and consistent listings on the travel sites guests already use.

This guide is written for hotel and homestay owners, and for the freelancers and agencies who take a hotel on as a client. It covers what travellers search for, how Google treats lodging differently from other businesses, the website problems that keep coming up, and a checklist for the first month.

What do travellers search for when they look for a hotel?

Travellers search by place first, then by type of stay, then by what they need. Someone planning a trip to Rishikesh does not search "accommodation services". They type the destination, often with a landmark or a feature they care about.

These are example phrases to show the pattern, not measured search volumes:

What the traveller wantsExample searches
Somewhere in a place"hotels in Udaipur", "homestay in Coorg", "resort in Lonavala"
Near a landmark"hotel near Golden Temple", "stay near Pune railway station", "hotel near Delhi airport"
A type of stay"boutique hotel in Jaipur", "family resort near Bangalore", "budget hotel in Manali"
A feature"hotel with pool in Goa", "pet friendly homestay Kasol", "couple friendly hotel in Mumbai"
A trip purpose"wedding resort in Jim Corbett", "business hotel in Gurgaon"
Right now"hotel near me", "rooms available tonight near me"

Three things follow. Your landmarks matter as much as your city, so name the railway station, temple, beach or highway exit you are close to. Each type of guest (families, couples, business travellers, wedding parties) needs a clear page or section that speaks to them. And features such as parking, a pool or a pet policy need to be written out in plain words on your site and your Google profile, because travellers search for them by name.

The near me keyword finder lays out these shapes for your type of stay, city and nearby areas. It does not claim to know how many people search each phrase; it shows you the words to use.

How should a hotel set up its Google Business Profile?

Start by making sure Google sees you as the right kind of lodging, because hotels, homestays and rented homes follow different rules. The Google Business Profile, the free listing on Google Search and Maps, is often the first thing a traveller sees, with your photos, reviews and prices side by side.

Google sorts lodging into three groups: hotels, vacation rentals and outdoor lodging. Google's lodging category guide says a property belongs in the hotel group if it has a front desk or on-site management, accepts overnight guests, and has its property and business address listed publicly. Bed and breakfasts and guest houses sit in the hotel group. A whole flat or villa rented out with nobody on site is treated as a vacation rental, which follows different rules. A homestay where the family lives on the property and looks after guests is closer to a guest house; read Google's page and pick what you really are.

Then get these right:

  1. Name. The property's real name, as on the signboard. Google's guidelines say names should not carry marketing taglines or location details, and extra words can get the profile suspended. "Hill View Homestay" is fine; "Hill View Homestay Best Cheap Rooms Manali" is not.
  2. Category. Choose the most specific lodging category that fits, such as hotel, resort hotel, guest house or bed and breakfast. Type into the category box to see what Google offers today.
  3. Hotel details. Hotels do not set opening hours. Google's hotel help page says hotels cannot edit business hours because they are open to guests around the clock. Instead, fill in the amenities and services in the hotel details section: parking, Wi-Fi, pool, breakfast, accessibility, pets.
  4. The restaurant. A restaurant inside the hotel should have its own profile, according to the same guidelines on businesses that share a building.
  5. Photos. The entrance so guests can find you, every room type, bathrooms, the view, the dining area and the approach road if it is tricky.

Two things are not in your hands. Google decides the hotel class rating itself, from partner data, its own research and hotel attributes; you can only contact support if it looks wrong. And Google's posts policy does not let hotels publish offer posts or any post that mentions deals or discounts. Use posts for events, new rooms and seasonal news instead.

The Google listing scorecard is a quick self-check: you answer questions about the listing and get a fix list in order of importance. It works from your answers and does not read the listing. Our Google Business Profile checklist walks through every field.

How do free booking links work for hotels in India?

Free booking links put your own direct price next to the booking sites on your Google listing, and you get them by connecting your rates through a booking partner. When a traveller looks at a hotel on Google, they often see a list of prices from different sites. Your own website can be one of them without paying for ads.

According to Google's Hotel Center help, you need a connectivity partner to send your prices and availability to Google. That partner is usually the software you already use for rooms: a channel manager, a booking engine, a central reservation system or a property management system. Google's page said its direct integration was unavailable when we checked in October 2026, so the partner route is the way in.

The steps for an owner are simple:

  1. Verify your Google Business Profile first. Booking links attach to a verified hotel profile.
  2. Ask your channel manager or booking engine whether it is a Google connectivity partner. If it is, ask them to start sending your rates and availability to Google.
  3. If it is not, Google's page points to a partner directory where you can find one.
  4. Keep the price the same everywhere. An outdated rate on your own booking page, different from what Google shows, confuses guests and undoes the point.

For an agency, this is often the most valuable single change for a hotel client, because it turns the Google listing into a direct booking channel. It is set up by the hotel and its software vendor, so your job is to explain it and push it through, not to promise a number of bookings.

How should a hotel handle Google reviews?

Ask every guest for a review in the same way at checkout, never offer anything in return, and reply to every review in a calm, specific voice. Travellers read reviews closely for a stay, because they are trusting you with a night's sleep and often a family trip.

Google's review policy does not allow incentives for reviews, such as a discount on the next stay, a free breakfast or a late checkout. It also does not allow you to selectively ask only the guests you expect to be happy. Asking everyone is fine.

A routine that works for most properties:

  1. Ask at checkout or the same evening. A short WhatsApp message after checkout with a thank-you and the review link.
  2. Make it one tap. The Google review link generator gives you a direct link to the review box and a QR code for the reception desk or the room folder.
  3. Ask every guest, not only the ones who smiled at breakfast.
  4. Do not post reviews yourself, or ask staff and relatives to.

Replies matter as much as the reviews. A future guest reads how you answer a complaint about a noisy room or a late check-in. Thank the guest, say what you have done about the problem if it was fair, and give a number to talk privately if it needs more. The review reply writer drafts two replies for any review, and our guide on how to reply to Google reviews has worked examples. For more ways to ask, see how to get more Google reviews.

What schema markup should a hotel website use?

Use the schema.org Hotel type, or a closer match such as BedAndBreakfast or Resort, on the home page and contact page. Schema markup is a short block of hidden code that tells search engines, in their own format, what the business is and where it is.

Schema.org lists several lodging types: Hotel, Resort, BedAndBreakfast, Hostel, Motel, Campground and VacationRental. The fields that matter most for a property are:

  • name, address and telephone, exactly as on your Google profile, with the phone in +91 format.
  • checkinTime and checkoutTime, which travellers ask about constantly.
  • amenityFeature, for the facilities you list on Google.
  • numberOfRooms, if you want to state it.
  • starRating, only for an official rating from a rating body, with that body named. Do not put your Google review average here.

The local business schema generator has Hotel as a business type and produces code you can paste into your site. For a homestay or resort, generate it as Hotel and change the type to BedAndBreakfast or Resort by hand. Our local business schema guide explains where to paste it and how to test it. Schema does not lift you up the results on its own; it helps Google match your website to your listing.

What are the most common website problems on hotel sites?

Most hotel websites lose direct bookings for the same five reasons, and each one is fixable.

  1. Heavy photo galleries that load slowly on mobile. Travellers browse on phones, often on patchy hill-station data. Check the home page with the mobile speed check, which shows Google's speed scores and the fixes that save the most time.
  2. One "Rooms" page for everything. Give each room type its own section or page with photos, bed type, who it suits and what is included. Travellers compare rooms, and so does Google.
  3. No page about the location. A good "How to reach us" page covers distance from the railway station, airport and bus stand, road conditions in the monsoon, parking and nearby sights. This is exactly what people search before booking.
  4. The booking button leads somewhere confusing. If your booking engine opens on a different-looking site with different prices, guests leave and book on a travel site instead. Keep the look and the rates consistent.
  5. Prices, policies and contact details only in images. A tariff card as a photo cannot be read by Google or by a screen reader. Write rates, check-in times, cancellation rules and a tap-to-call number as plain text, and add a WhatsApp button.

The free website audit reads up to 25 pages of a site and lists problems like these in plain words, ordered by what to fix first.

Which travel and listing sites matter for hotels?

After Google, the listings that matter most for a hotel are the booking sites guests already use and Tripadvisor, all with exactly the same name, address and phone. These mentions of your business on other sites are called citations.

Booking sites such as MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, Booking.com and Airbnb charge a commission per booking, so the aim of SEO is not to leave them but to win more bookings directly alongside them. Tripadvisor lets owners claim a listing for free and reply to reviews. Bing Places, Facebook and Instagram round out the basics.

What counts is that every listing agrees. A different phone number on one site or an old address on another makes Google less sure which is right, and sends guests to the wrong gate. The business listing tracker has a hotel filter that lists the booking, review and map sites to cover, and the NAP consistency checker shows which of your listings disagree. Our guide to local SEO for small business explains citations in more depth.

A first-month SEO checklist for a hotel or homestay

Do these in order. The Google profile and booking links come first because travellers see them before your website.

WeekWhat to do
Week 1Confirm your lodging type on Google's category page. Fix the profile: real name, specific category, hotel details and amenities, photos of every room type. Run the Google listing scorecard.
Week 2Ask your channel manager or booking engine about free booking links and get your rates connected. Start the checkout review routine with a review link and QR code.
Week 3Fix the website: speed, one section per room type, a "How to reach us" page, text rates and policies, tap-to-call and WhatsApp. Add Hotel schema.
Week 4Claim Tripadvisor and tidy your booking-site listings so the name, address and phone match everywhere. Reply to every review from the last few months.
ThroughoutNo offer posts on Google. No reviews in exchange for discounts or upgrades.

If the website is connected to Google Search Console, the free Google tool that shows which searches your pages appear for, check it at the end of the month for destination and landmark searches. Our guide on how long SEO takes explains why a month is the start.

Frequently asked questions

How can a hotel get more direct bookings from Google?

Verify the Google Business Profile, connect your rates through a channel manager or booking engine that works with Google so free booking links appear, and make your website's booking flow fast and consistent. Good reviews and thoughtful replies then help travellers choose you.

Can a homestay have a Google Business Profile?

Usually yes, if someone on site manages guests and the address is public; Google groups bed and breakfasts and guest houses with hotels. A whole home rented out with nobody on site is treated as a vacation rental, which follows different rules. Check Google's lodging category page before creating a profile.

Why can't my hotel add opening hours on Google?

Google does not let hotels edit business hours, because a hotel is treated as open to guests all the time. Use the hotel details section for amenities and services instead, and put check-in and check-out times on your website.

Is SEO worth it if we already get bookings from MakeMyTrip and Booking.com?

Yes, because every booking through those sites carries a commission, while a direct booking does not. SEO will not replace them, but more direct bookings from Google and your own site improve what you keep from each room night.

What schema type should a resort use?

Schema.org has a Resort type under LodgingBusiness. Use it on the home and contact pages with the same name, address and phone as your Google profile, plus check-in and check-out times.
