Indexability Checker

Indexability Checker is a free tool that finds what stops Google listing a page: a noindex tag, an X-Robots-Tag header, a stray canonical or an error code.

A page that Google will not list cannot rank, no matter how good it is. This checks the four things that quietly keep a page out of search results: a noindex tag, an X-Robots-Tag header, a canonical pointing somewhere else, and an error status code.

How to use it

  1. 1Paste the address of the page you are worried about.
  2. 2Check the robots meta tag and the X-Robots-Tag header. Either can carry a noindex.
  3. 3Check the canonical. If it points at a different page, Google will usually show that one instead.
  4. 4If anything is blocking the page and it should not be, that is the single most valuable fix on your site.

Common questions

Why is my page not appearing in Google?

The common causes, in order: the page is too new, it carries a noindex tag left over from development, robots.txt blocks it, the canonical points elsewhere, or the page genuinely is not good enough to rank yet. This tool rules out the middle three in a few seconds.

What is a noindex tag?

An instruction telling search engines not to list a page. It is useful on thank-you pages and internal search results. It is catastrophic when a developer leaves it on a live site after launch, which happens more often than anyone admits.

Does this check robots.txt too?

Not on this page โ€” robots.txt controls crawling rather than indexing, and it is a site-wide file. Our Website Audit reads it as part of a full check.
