AI Overviews for Local Businesses: When They Show, and What to Do
By Neha
AI Overviews for local businesses show up mostly on question searches, such as "how much does a root canal cost in Pune", while plain "trade plus area" searches, such as "dentist in Kothrud", still mostly show the map pack. So a local business needs both: a strong Google Business Profile and reviews for the map pack, and clear answer pages on its website for the questions customers ask first.
This guide explains which local searches tend to get an AI Overview and which get the map pack, what decides each, and a practical list for a shop owner or an agency handling local clients. It separates what Google documents from what studies have observed.
Short answer: keep your Google Business Profile complete, verified and full of genuine reviews, make your name, address and phone match everywhere, add local business structured data that matches your page, and write a page or section for each common cost, time and "is it safe" question in your trade. The first half wins the map pack; the second half is what AI Overviews can link to.
When does an AI Overview show for local searches?
AI Overviews mostly appear on informational and "cost in my city" searches; the map pack dominates when someone simply wants a business nearby.
Google has not published how often AI Overviews appear on local searches. It says only that AI Overviews are shown "when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search", on its AI features page.
The clearest outside data we found is a Whitespark study published in May 2025. It checked 540 searches by hand across six trades in three US cities, sorted by intent:
| Type of search | Example of this type (ours) | AI Overview shown | Map pack shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local (find a business) | "dentist in [city]" | 15% | 93% |
| Informational | "how long does an eye exam take" | 92% | 6% |
| Hybrid (question plus place) | "cost of dental implants in [city]" | 97% | 17% |
The study's author calls it an "inverse relationship" by intent. It is one small US sample, collected by hand in 2025, so treat the percentages as a pattern, not a forecast for Jaipur or Coimbatore. The pattern is easy to test for your own trade: search ten of each type yourself and count.
Map pack or AI Overview: what decides each?
The map pack is driven by your Google Business Profile; AI Overview links come from indexed web pages, with your profile as supporting information.
| Map pack | AI Overview links | |
|---|---|---|
| What Google uses | Google Business Profile listings | Indexed pages that can show a snippet |
| Google's stated factors | Relevance, distance and prominence | Normal SEO best practice; no extra requirements |
| What you control | Profile details, categories, reviews, photos, hours | Your website's pages, plus your profile and listings |
| Can you pay for a better spot? | No | No |
For the map pack, Google's Business Profile help page on local ranking names relevance, distance and prominence, recommends complete information, verification, accurate hours, reviews with replies and photos, and says "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google."
For AI features, Google's guide to generative AI features says AI responses can include information about local businesses, and that Google Business Profiles "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results". It does not say how much weight a profile carries, so read that as a reason to keep it accurate, not a ranking formula.
What local searches look like in India
Sort your customers' searches into the same three types, because each type needs a different fix.
These are example phrases written by us, not search volumes:
- Find a business: "ac repair near me", "physiotherapist in Indiranagar", "best biryani in Lucknow". Expect the map pack. Your Google Business Profile does the work.
- Learn something: "why is my inverter battery draining fast", "how long does a root canal take", "is laser hair removal safe". Expect an AI Overview. A helpful page on your site is what can be linked.
- Question plus place: "root canal cost in Pune", "modular kitchen price in Bengaluru", "CA fees for GST registration in Ahmedabad". These are the most valuable for small businesses, because the searcher is close to buying and the answer can name local prices.
The near me keyword finder lists local and Hinglish phrases for a business type, which gives you a starting list to sort. Our guide to ranking for near me searches covers the map pack side in depth.
What can a shop owner do?
Do the map pack basics first, then add one answer page for each common question in your trade.
- Complete and verify your Google Business Profile. Right categories, hours including festival hours, services, photos and your website link. The Google listing scorecard asks 26 questions about your listing and gives a score out of 100 with a fix list. It works from your answers, so it is only as accurate as they are.
- Earn genuine reviews and reply to them. The Google review link generator makes a short link that opens your review box, and the review print kit turns it into a counter standee or bill sticker. The review reply writer drafts polite replies in English or Hinglish. Never buy reviews; our guide to getting more Google reviews covers what Google allows.
- Make your name, address and phone identical everywhere. Paste each version from Google, Justdial, IndiaMART and your site into the NAP consistency checker to see which listings disagree.
- Add local business structured data. The local business schema generator builds the code for your business type, address, map location and opening hours. Google's structured data policies require it to match what visitors see, so use the same details as your page and profile.
- Write answer pages for question-plus-place searches. One clear page or section per question: your price range with the month checked, how long it takes, what is included. Our guide on how to write content for AI Overviews shows how to open each one.
- Get listed where AI Overviews link for your trade. If the same directories or local news sites keep appearing for your searches, list your business there. The business listing tracker is a checklist of 47 Indian and global listing sites, filtered by business type.
What should an agency do for local clients?
Split the client's searches by intent, report the map pack and AI Overviews separately, and be honest about what you can measure.
A practical first month for a local client:
- Build a search list of 30 phrases, ten of each type above, from Search Console queries and the client's own enquiry calls.
- Check each by hand from the client's city: map pack position, whether an AI Overview appears, and which sites it links. Record the date and device.
- Fix the profile first if the client is missing from the map pack for "find a business" searches. Those searches are closest to a phone call.
- Assign one page to each high-value question-plus-place search, and brief the content with the client's real prices and process.
- Read Search Console's Generative AI report monthly for impressions in AI features. Our guide on how to track AI Overviews explains what it shows and what it does not.
Be clear with clients about tooling. Upgrowly does not track map pack rankings, local rankings or AI Overview appearances. Its Search Console rankings tool shows the client's own Google clicks, positions and searches, from Search Console. For map pack grids you need a dedicated local rank tracker. Our local SEO audit for clients guide covers the rest of the audit.
What does not work?
Shortcuts that hurt trust with customers tend to hurt with Google too.
- Paying for placement. Google says you cannot pay for a better local ranking, and there is no paid placement in AI Overview links either. Ads are separate and labelled.
- Stuffing the business name with keywords. "Sharma Dental Best Dentist Pune Cheap" is not your business name. Our Google Business Profile optimisation guide explains what the name field should contain.
- Fake or bought reviews. They destroy the trust that makes reviews worth having, and customers learn to spot them. Our guide to replying to Google reviews covers handling the real ones well instead.
- Copying another clinic's or shop's page and changing the city name. Thin, duplicated city pages are the opposite of the unique, local detail Google's AI guide asks for.
- Blocking Google from your site with a firewall or robots.txt rule. If Googlebot cannot read your pages, they cannot be linked in AI Overviews at all.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI Overviews replace the Google map pack?
Not for most "find a business" searches. In Whitespark's 2025 US study, the map pack appeared on 93% of plain local searches and AI Overviews on 15%. AI Overviews were far more common on informational and cost-type questions.
Does my Google Business Profile affect AI Overviews?
Google says Business Profiles can help a business's products and services be visible in AI responses and other Search results. It does not say how much, so keep the profile complete and accurate as part of normal local SEO.
Do I need a website to appear in AI Overviews?
AI Overview links point to web pages, so a page of your own is what can be linked. Without a website you can still appear in the map pack and be mentioned through directories or news sites that are linked.
Does local business schema help with AI Overviews?
Google says no special schema is needed for AI features. LocalBusiness markup still helps Google read your address, hours and type accurately, and it must match what is on the page.
Can an agency guarantee a client appears in AI Overviews?
No. Google says serving is never guaranteed, even for pages that meet every requirement. An agency can improve the profile, reviews, listings and answer pages, and report the results honestly.
