Target Country Checker

Target Country Checker is a free tool that reads a page and shows which country it looks like it serves to Google, and whether that is the country you want.

  • Free
  • No sign-up
  • Checks a live page

Google decides which country a website is for by reading the website itself. Your domain ending, the language tag in the code, the currency in your prices, the country code on your phone number, the postcode in your address and the address in your structured data all point somewhere. When they point to different countries, Google has to guess, and a shop in Pune can end up shown to searchers in London. Paste a page, pick the country you want to reach, and see every signal, the country it points to, and what to change. No account needed.

Guide

How to use it

  1. 1Paste your page address. Your home page is a good start.
  2. 2Pick the country whose customers you want. India is selected for you.
  3. 3Press Check this page and read the verdict: which country the page looks like it serves.
  4. 4Go through the list of signals. Each one shows what we found and the country it points to.
  5. 5Make the fixes under "What to change", then check the page again.

What the results mean

Geotargeting
Showing a website to people in the right country. For Google search it means the clues on your site that tell Google which country's searchers your pages are for.
Country domain (ccTLD)
A domain ending that belongs to one country, such as .in for India or .co.uk for the UK. It is the strongest single clue. Endings like .com, .net, .io and .co are treated as worldwide.
Hreflang
A tag in your page code that says which language and country a page is for, such as en-IN for English for India. It matters most when you have versions of a page for more than one country.
LocalBusiness schema
A short block of code that describes your business to Google in a fixed format: name, address, phone. Its addressCountry field states your country in a way Google cannot misread.

Common questions

Can I set my target country in Google Search Console?

Not any more. Google removed the International Targeting report, and its country setting, from Search Console in 2022. Google now works out the country from your site itself, which is why the signals this tool checks are what count.

I have a .com domain. Do I need a .in domain to rank in India?

No. A .com is treated as worldwide, so it can rank in any country. You then need the other signals to point to India: an Indian address with PIN code, a +91 phone number, prices in rupees and a language tag such as en-IN.

Does it matter where my website is hosted?

Very little today. Most sites are served through networks that answer from a server near each visitor, so the hosting location says almost nothing about your customers. This tool does not check it.

My business serves several countries. What should I do?

Make a version of the page for each country, each with its own currency, phone number and address where you have one, and link them together with hreflang tags. Then check each version here with its own country picked.

What does the tool read from my site?

Only the one page you enter, read once as UpgrowlyBot, the same way our other single-page checkers read it. It looks at the domain, the language and hreflang tags, the Open Graph locale, the page text (for currencies, phone numbers and postcodes) and any structured data on the page.
