Guide
How to use it
- 1Enter the monthly searches for your keyword. You can find this in Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner or a keyword tool.
- 2Choose your current position (or โnot rankingโ) and the position you are aiming for.
- 3Add your conversion rate, how many enquiries turn into customers, and the average customer value.
- 4Compare the extra visits, enquiries and revenue, and use the table to see what each page-one spot is worth.
What the results mean
- Position
- Where your page appears among Googleโs ordinary (non-ad) results. Position 1 is the top; 11 to 20 is page two, which very few people ever see.
- Click-through rate (CTR)
- The share of searchers who click a result. The top result gets roughly a quarter of all clicks; the tenth gets only a couple of per cent.
- Monthly searches
- How many times a month people type the keyword into Google. Your own Search Console โimpressionsโ figure for a keyword is a good real-world stand-in.
Common questions
Where do the click-through rates come from?
Page-one figures follow Backlinkoโs widely cited study of about 4 million Google results; page two is our cautious estimate. They are industry averages โ your real numbers vary with ads, maps and the type of search.
Why is position 1 worth so much more than position 5?
Most people click one of the first three results and never scroll further. On average, moving from fifth to first more than quadruples the clicks for the same searches.
My keyword has maps or ads above the results. Does that change things?
Yes. Ads, the map pack and shopping boxes take clicks before anyone reaches the ordinary results, so your real click-through rate may be lower. Treat these figures as an upper estimate for such searches.
