If a site has versions in different languages or for different countries, hreflang tags tell Google which one to show whom. They are easy to get subtly wrong, and wrong tags are worse than none โ Google may show the wrong language to the wrong person.

Common questions
Do I need hreflang for a single-language site?
No. It only applies when the same content exists in more than one language or is targeted at more than one country.
What is x-default for?
It names the version to show someone whose language or country you have not covered. Without it, Google picks for itself.
Should Hindi and English versions both have tags?
Yes, and each must reference the other as well as itself. Hreflang only works when the references are reciprocal.
