Meta Description Checker

Meta Description Checker is a free tool that shows whether a page's description, the grey text under its Google link, is missing, too short or too long.

  • Free
  • No sign-up
  • Checks a live page

The meta description is the grey text under your link in Google. It does not affect ranking directly, but it decides how many people click โ€” and if you leave it empty, Google picks a sentence from the page for you, which is rarely the one you would have chosen.

Guide

How to use it

  1. 1Paste the page address and press Check this page.
  2. 2See whether a description exists at all โ€” a surprising number of pages have none.
  3. 3Check the length. Google shows about 160 characters before cutting it off.
  4. 4Rewrite it so the first sentence stands on its own, in case the rest is cut.

Common questions

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. Google has said for years it is not a ranking factor. It affects how many people click your result, which over time affects how well your page does โ€” so it matters, just not in the way people assume.

What if I leave it blank?

Google writes one by pulling a passage from your page. Sometimes that works fine. Often it grabs a navigation label or a half sentence, and you have handed away control of the first impression.

How long should it be?

Between about 70 and 160 characters. Shorter than 70 usually means you have not said enough to earn a click; longer than 160 gets cut off.
